PostPosted: Mon Jun 15, 2020 12:07 pm    Post subject: Roof Rack Build, Eventually Small Batch For Group-Buy Reply with quote

Greetings fellow type 3 enthusiasts. Let me start with a preamble that hopefully posting a "group buy" like this in the forums is okay since I don't actually have anything for sale yet?

But I have been slowly putting together a 3/4 length roof rack for my Squareback since Pedro is no longer selling his racks, and I was wondering if there was any interest in me doing up a small batch of these for some fellow members?

I don't have any photos of mine yet since I'm mid-process of getting dimensions and such figured out, but it would be your traditional classic looking rack with wood slats and all that jazz. Once I have my Squareback running again and can take it to the shop for final fit-up I'll get some good photos so everyone can see the final product prior to actually moving forward with anything.

Details:

Frame would be 304 stainless tubing TIG welded by yours personally.
Slats are yet to be determined as I haven't been able to find readily available 1/2"x2" slats but will end up being some sort of hardwood. (If you have a supplier for beech or poplar or similar small slats please let me know! Most of what I've found is either larger boards, or moulding...)

I estimated the cost to be $600 each for a batch of 5 racks, less money if there's more interest.

Unfortunately these would *only* be for Squarebacks as I don't have any other T3's take measurements from or do fit-up on...

So go ahead and post here in this thread if you're interested in getting updates, I'll be posting everything related here in this thread. Possibly be some questions when it comes to actual mounting methods and any other issues I run into but I'll burn that bridge when I get to it. Rolling Eyes

Place advertisments for 'Custom Built Racks' like Pedro did. Build 'to suit' for guaranteed sales!

Here is the mostly completed frame. Ends need to be capped and all the joints completely welded around as it's just tacked basically at this point.

This is as much as I plan on having for my personal rack as I want to be able to load up 2x4s or whatever directly on the bed of the rack vs on cross members on front and back of it.

If anyone wants to comment or critique now's your chance Laughing

Just a note to everyone interested, as this gets closer to "production" I'll PM everyone to confirm details etc and then put up an ad for any remaining in case anyone ends up not wanting one at that point.

So if you post up here you'll be first in line and will be directly notified once my "prototype" is done and you can see the final product.

I should be able to order up some slats to try out here somewhat soon so still making progress.

Cheers all!

If you're still looking for wood slats, here is a link https://www.cbperformance.com/product-p/bd-792.htm

I have a Flat-4 3/4 length rack that was refurbished with these. Looks spot on to me.

They do seem awfully expensive though Shocked

Thanks for the interest guys, haven't done a whole lot lately to the prototype but still moving forward.

Overall length is 5 feet, and I can ship to Canada but I have no idea how much that would cost.

Just to keep everyone in the loop, not much progress on the rack. But tomorrow I'm planing on bringing the Squareback down to start fitting up, gotten enough miles on it now I'm more comfortable taking it an hour down to the shop.

Hope everyone is staying safe and well and has gotten some time behind the wheel or working on your car.

Dude. You've aged. Type 3 ownership will do that.

I believe this is the death or Rev1, time to start Rev2. Width looks okay, if I go any wider the back end of it will hang over the edge. But I do NOT like how high the center of the rack is. I could swear I took all the cross pieces home and checked against roof profile but somewhere along the line those go curved too much. Confused
Time to pick up that HF tubing roller me thinks.
