That actually looks really good! A lot of work for sure, but well handled. I love the overhead shot, Ghia looks beautiful!!

On to the inner sliding headliner.

Mrs L did a nice job sewing it so i can’t muck it up.

The bottom of the front wood header was not smooth with the latch mechanism. To level this I used 2 layers of felt to build up a level surface the headliner will rest up against.

I am going to glue to the sliding head liner to the vertical face and across the top of the header bow.

I then made a template to cut the latch and level holes into the sliding panel These have to be spaced the correct distance from the bows.

The 7/8 punch worked well for the level hole.

The blue top matches the blue in the VW nose emblem and interior blue vinyl well

Thanks so much for the compliments!

I still see miles of work ahead, dreading the windshield chrome and weather to install it before like the manual or after like some other hints here. Also the orginal sekurit windshield will be used although far from perfect.

Here my friend Dan is Brazil is helping to make a digital model of the Webasto Lowlight. Not far from a final product.

I will not use a mirror but he like using it for now. I need a retractable antenna!

A couple of points here

The sliding bows had a covering on them on the outer edge. This edge slips into slits to be cut in the cover. I had some heat shrink tubing from the Alken wiring harness which worked well. This is likely to keep the meta bows from cutting through the covering.

On the sliding headliner I had to insert the bows and cut the “listing” hoops to allow for the anchor tabs to poke out for the lift arms. Here is a few shots of the back side. We used pretty heavy fabrics to get the listing hoops straight. I hope they are not so stiff where the sliding liner will not settle down.

You can see where I had to cut a taper on the hoop to allow the tab to stick out. The angle cut should allow support for the edge.

Close enough for “hand gernade” tolerances.

We will let it stretch out a little and then glue to header.

There are screw holes on the center bow to attach the sliding liner. Not sure I’m going to attach those.

Thanks!

Everything is now glued to the header. All the is left are the chrome alignment pins to install on the front, reattach the cover, and cut the slits to let the header bows hold down the cover. Every piece of hardware came with the roof panel and was not lost over the past 30 years.

All in all it really came out nice without much to go on. Thanks for some of the tips along the way.

I just got notice my carpet set is in its way from Sew Fine. I sent them all of my original pieces and they cut it accordingly. I guess their patterns for later cars were not close enough so they took the time to match it exact. I can’t wait to see it.

On the top view with the sun roof cover back you can see the inner workings. I had to buy some split rivets to attach the header bows. I could see the screw heads poking up on the vinyl that were used for the temporary setup.

The headliner inside is nice and tight.

The fabric is not glued to the rear wood bow. This will allow me to tighten it if it needs it at some point in the future.

Now off to Florida for a break.

Well got back from Florida and had a nice package.

It is a full carpet kit including front rubber kick panel The color is blue German square weave but my lighting went more grey. They also ordered some cloth binding to match the original.

They also covered both door handles and renewed the leather strip. I bought some extra piping and blue vinyl in the past for such an occasion. The blue vinyl is also used to trim out the door openings and grab handle.

Don’t need it just yet so we will let it stretch out some.

Crew at Sew Fine used my original pieces as patterns and it looks great including the heater outlets.

The panel for under the back seat is interesting as there are no block off panels to section off what would be under the rear seat bottom. Not sure when those metal panels were added.

I have the rubber floor mats and rubber tunnel cover.

Garcia delivered some great NOS screws for the aluminum trim around the opening.

Basically how I found her out in the wild 30 years ago

She had one owner and just about 65,000 miles. The repaint to silver happened in the mid 60s

Adding to an already started thread on installing the rear quarter windows.

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=10001307#10001307

There is a link to some good pictures here from 2009 thanks

These small gaskets with an aluminum plate must be early 56 stuff. Not in the parts book anywhere. Maybe my aluminum window seals were a different length? Pretty complicated little part. I see why they got rid of it.

This getting my son to the big island of Hawaii is a full-time job…. He is going to work in the Hilo airport tower as an air traffic controller so stop by if you are a VW fan and say hello to him when on the island. If you live there he would love to meet you. He is sending his 2018 Golf AWD sport wagon over. He sees a drag strip......

10 min for the Ghia

I was waiting for some exact screws for the quarter windows and door top moldings

These are N 11 320 1 metal screws that are 2.2 mm x 13 mm

There are 22 used on the trim. I have enough now to do 45 Ghias and will make sets of 30 available to help out and recover some costs. Crazy expensive. These are from Germany in stainless
