I have done a search and getting two answers, Stone beige and Silver beige for the 58/59 seat frames.
The most suggestions are for Silver beige, but I wanted to check that the exterior paint colours didn't have influence on the colour as per the wheel centre colours for different paint combinations. _________________ -------------------

It seems Stone Beige was used for the Steering Column no matter the body colour but I can't find the colour for seat frames. I think another colour being used is unlikely...but that's just a personal opinion. _________________ John.

I have now come across a post, not only calling Silver beige, but explaining there are 2 versions .
L466 Silver beige from 1960 and above. (Brown/Grey)
L277 Silver beige to 1960. (Green/Grey)
The simplest things become complex when you dig deeper ! _________________ -------------------

Mine are the original colour and from what I can see never retouched but the trouble is would I be able to tell you if that original colour is "Silver" or "Stone"
Edit: Took a quick picture. Try as I may I can't see anything relating to "Silver"...looks like "Stone Beige" to me...you'd expect "Silver Beige" to have a lustre to it.

Thanks cruiser, I had previously looked at that post, but it just seems to throw more confusion, as it calls out the steering column tube for cabriolets as L471 - Stone beige. - see below.
Was there a difference in Coupes versus Cabriolets ?- Which I doubt as not cost effective for mass production, but then, there is the centre wheel colour difference with paint schemes that's not cost effective either.

I have managed to get some aerosol cans made up with the Silver beige (L466 only - L277 not available ) and the stone beige L471 for comparison.
Although I prefer the silver beige, the stone looks correct to John Moxons seat

Your seat frames are Silver Beige John; a little rough around the edges (known as worn in) but original.
seat frames from 55-57 Black
" " " 58-60 Silver Beige
" " " 61-67 Stone Beige (sorry made a mistake here)
" " " 68- 74 Black
that's how I see it anyway. _________________ Cheers,

I have my original paint steering wheel from a 65 ghia I owned in the 90's, its overlay-ed on the test panels - the wheel looks darker than the re-painted steering wheel in my 58 car, but close to the silver beige - opinion & thoughts on the comparison ?

Having original parts as a reference for color comparison is great, but I wonder if it's really valid to compare the surface of a freshly painted surface to one that is 60+ years old.
Even if the old part has been cleaned up as well as possible, wouldn't the old part's paint surface be discolored from age, exposure to sunlight, and the effects of having been handled so much?
A better idea of what that old paint really looked like when new could probably be gotten by gently and carefully color sanding the surface to expose a layer of paint that hasn't been affected by the environmental conditions for six decades or more.
Obviously that idea raises new concerns about possible damage to what may be an old part in otherwise really good condition, and once the original "patina" has been removed it can never be replaced.
In the antique collectibles world, removing the original patina almost always devalues the object, often to a surprisingly great degree.
I'm probably just overthinking this whole thing in my typical fashion.
It's just kind of surprising that after SO many enthusiasts have grappled with this same color question for SO long, that a definitive consensus hasn't already been arrived at. |
