Isn't it funny when you hear people say at shows their VW is rust free when anyone that has done the metal work really knows rust hides everywhere.

More progress:
Yesterday was a perfect day for sand blasting. Not too humid. I’m working on the rear lip where the cargo floors meet the parcel tray. Hopefully the cargo floors will be going in this week, fingers crossed! |

More progress. I got the rest of the patching done in the rear of the bus. Welded in the jack points, prepped and started welding in the cargo floors. I still need to finish welding in the cargo floors then grind down the plug welds:
While I was waiting for paint to dry I put this together:
Originally I planned to splice in part of the inner valance. Since then we decided to replace the entire inner and outer valances. We are also going to replace part of the lower nose skin, so it made sense to go this route. I plan to work on the valances once the cargo floors are done. The funky green pile is rapidly shrinking! |

More progress! The cargo floor is done other than the striker plate, seat brackets and heat log (and some grinding ):
I'm going to try and fit the built up valance in next. I dug into it the last few days:
I still need to finish removing some of the OG valance remains, trim the a pillars back and fix the bottom half of the headlight support panel:

I finished cleaning off the frame ends this morning. I need to cut back the A pillars so I can get the rust out and fit the valances in. The main issue is that the doors don't open very far with the front rotisserie hoop on. I think I will modify it to be more like Glidekings, but for now:
Now there is plenty of room! |

In order to get the valances in I had to cut the A pillars back. To do this I had to remove the doors. Most of the screws came out easily:
I got the valances crammed in to place. I'm going to fit the lower half of the headlight support panel to the valances, then remove the conglomeration to weld, then re cram, and weld the lower half to the upper half, then weld the valances to the frame. I do plan to replace some of the lower rusty areas of the nose skin, but want the valances done first so everything is lined up.

Making progress. After I welded the bottom half of the headlight support panel to the valances, I could not fit the piece onto the frame ends under the nose. When I did it on the 15 window bus I did not have the seat bases in. I am figuring that with the extra flexibility of not having the seat bases in, I was able to make it happen. I ended up lopping off the passenger side frame end to get the piece in place:
While I had my head under the dash, I saw this broken bolt, and zapped it out:
Most of the welding is done on the frame ends and support panel. Working on the A Pillar ends now. Klassic Fab sent duplicates of one of A pillar pieces instead of a left and a right, so we made one:
The outer valance was a little off, so I made a slight adjustment:
The right side looks fine:

It’s been a while... I started fitting the A pillars and they were fighting me so I took a break. I got back on them and won the battle:
Moving on! I’m working on the passenger side dog leg. I put the door back on and cranked the pillar in to get the gap where I want it. The last dog leg I did could have fit better. I decided to check this one for squareness. It’s good:
I started fitting the back end to the B pillar. I used sheet metal screws to tighten the gap on the last one. This one seems to fit better so I’m clamping and hammering:
Gap is good:
Now on to the front. |

Good to see an update from you. Sometimes you got to walk away for a little bit...or at least I do. It takes a lot of dedication. |

Haha. It was a nice break. I was still doing VW stuff. The whole time I was walking around those pesky A pillars wishing life was easy. I saw a post on Instagram from @Splitbusfinland of the A pillars he fixed on his double cab. Those photos inspired/motivated me to get it in gear. Hopefully I won't get hung up on the dog legs.
Thanks Boulderz! |
