I think they mean that the rust is free, ie the rust comes for no extra charge, |

I've never considered the difference having an early walk through with the shifter further back. It's just right there in the middle of the walk through!
I don't know the correct angle of the e-brake and I'm sure someone will beat me to getting the info you need but I've got to say, I love the look of the early crooked e-brake. _________________ Oil Capital Air Cooled

Me too! The straight shifter set back by the seat is really cool too! |

The E Brake handle in Sept 58 straight shifter Kombi.
Factory position. Looks like about six or seven degrees off of vertical.
Looks like yours is angled a little too much to the passenger side.
If I run a straight edge up from mine, the line intersects the dash at the bottom of the second full vertical slit to the right of the radio hole.
Yours looks like it intersects at the bottom of the fourth vertical slit. _________________ The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance, but the illusion of knowledge

Oh wow! Excellent information! Looks like I’m going to persuade it over a bit.
Much appreciated Riff Raff! |

It’s been a while since I updated the thread. Progress has been made but still more to do. I finished up the nose:
I got the heat log in (I missed taking a picture of it installed (looks like a heat log))
I fixed the rot above the cargo doors:
Now I’m trying to fix the roof:
It’s been a challenge trying to stay focused and make time for everything but this bus will get worked on sooner than later. |

I have been picking away at the bus. I am making progress now. I feel like I'm getting close to the finish line. I plan to make a punch list soon. For now, I have the roof 95% done:
I made a spare tire tray and welded it in:
I welded up a bunch of holes on the luggage tray:
I welded the E brake mount in place (6 degrees from vertical. Thanks Riff Raff!)
I smoothed out the long rocker:
I also master coated inside the engine compartment and one of the wheel wells. I am working on the heat ducting now. I want to put the piece that goes from the cab floor to the windshield in first, but it is rusted solid. I have been soaking and scraping but it's still not moving. It will though. I know it wants to. |

Matt C has been up for the last few days working on his bus (while I was gone camping and fishing and having fun (sorry Matt!)) The bottom is all Master coated now. There are a few spots that need welding, and the cable tubes and heat ducts need to be put on. We are trying to wrap up the bottom and get this bad boy back on the ground!

I am attempting to finish off the underside of the bus now. I put in all of the cable tubes, and am now working on the heater ducts. Once this is done we will touch up the bare spots with Master coat before we put the grey underneath. I am not sure if there is an easy way to install the tubes or the heat ducts. I definitely chose the most difficult way possible.

here is you a question from a non-expert (that would be me): would it make sense to zink metal spray pitted metal like this prior to applying a permanent finish like a powedercoat? Seems like it would both, prevent rust, and also fill in the pits?
not exactly sure of the actual terminology, but i mean spraying it with molten zinc. _________________ regards

Probably would. The silver Master Coat that I have been using is very thick and actually does fill in the pits. It can be sanded to a smooth finished base prior to painting. The powder coating that I have done in the past (as a hobbyist) shows everything underneath. I bought some lab (lap)? Metal from Eastwood which is like a metal paste that withstands the 400 degrees temperature when baking the powder. It’s like metal bondo. The Master Coat would melt and smoke in the oven. |
