Last June, while Russ (aerosilver on here) and I were at the ace Bad Camberg meet in Germany, this advert popped up on TS:

The Ghia sounded interesting. But by the time I was home, refreshed & had seen the ad, it was already marked as Pending.
I wasn’t seriously in the hunt for an early Ghia anyway. I had enough on my plate waist-deep in a Bus project.

The best lowlight color ever. Objectively speaking of course.

That was mine, it was sold and shipped to England.
He has said that he may start a rebuild thread sometime soon.

I just read the first post. Anyone want to guess who bought the car?

Thanks guys

The Coupe had been pending to a guy in Holland, but no deposit had been forthcoming. Russ had been in contact with the co-owner Tim several years previously, and was next in line to buy the ‘56.

I joked to Russ that as he already had a fantastic ‘55, he should let me buy this ‘56 - especially as I have a real soft spot for Gazelle Beige, with its Copper Red/Brown seats and Brown wheels. I think of it as the original Ghia colour...for example, the ‘53 Prototype & the Kasino Hotel stage Ghia unveil in Georgsmarienhutte. I had always left room for another thinback Ghia (and the underdash vent twist-knobs) - ever since Russ stole my ‘57 back in ‘99.

With a twist of fate, & despite Russ really liking the car from years ago, he reluctantly decided it was financially not great timing. Russ rang me to ask had I been serious...maybe he could ask Tim to consider me as a buyer. God, was I serious? I think so. He made me promise not to mess Tim around. Yikes. How was I going to break the news of another relic to the wife? YIKES.

It was time to look more seriously at the ad’s link to further pictures.

Was it original exterior paint? Looked very white. Maybe an old repaint.
What was going on with the seats & door panels? Not quite sure.
How bad was the rust? That vent area, the rhs door, the corners, the floors, the bonnet?
Were the door gaps any good? 3 out of 4 panels were ajar
What parts were missing, or would need to be replaced? These can add up, can’t they

Well, that’s the chance you take buying from pictures.

I really didn’t want it to be too big a project. I had my bus for that. I just wanted a small project, & be able to drive it.

I remember seeing this car. Some nice htf early features like solid exterior trims, a one piece rear bumper? three row speaker grill? and the firewall mat.

Seems like a pretty good place to start...

Wow. It really is time to split the ghia forum up between lowlight owners and later Ghias. That is a pos only lowlight owners could love Very Happy

I know (hope!) you're probably joking, but it's far from a pos Smile , remarkably original/untouched 56 Ghias are few and far between, a prime candidate for preservation.

Come on RS, get us up to recent progress Laughing

What a nice car to restore.

What was the vin? I had a Trout Blue 56 Ghia made on June 20. I think it had the early bumper guards but they were not closed on the back side. It might have had one piece bumpers too. These bumpers look the same.

Car went to a Mr Grove in England about 10/97

Cool car. I met the prior owners back in the early 1990s when I was daily driving my coupe (Portland, Oregon area) and this one was still on the road.

There was another lowlight coupe (black 1957) that was also being daily driven during that time frame. Those were the days. Us ghia owners would wave, stop, and chat. Pre social media lol.

Hope to see this one brought back to life. Great start for sure.
