What causes the brake drum splines to strip out on a VW swing axle transmission? The axle nut is tight and the axle is straight. It's happened a couple of times over the years. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks |

Soft cheap drums, and/or not torqued to specification. Tight is subjective. What are you torquing the castle nut to? |

Not really using a torque wrench. 3/4 dr. Snap On ratchet 36" long giving all I can. That should be tight enough. |

Maybe the axle nut is bottoming out on the threads without fully clamping the drum in place. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Definitely a bit of a grey area there, are you a 350# gorilla or a latte sippin, 110# soaking wet, keyboard jockey? _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I just took off the castle nuts off my car today so I could change the brake shoes.
I weigh around 150. I wanted to see if I could budge the castle nuts just using my strength. With me jumping on a 4 foot cheater bar, I did not even budge them. Those suckers are tight.
I was able to easily get them off using an air impact. I will torque them back to 220 ft-lbs. |

I weighed less than that, and could remove those with 4-foot cheater bar; but I'm in Arizona. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. I got my torque multiplier today and used it to torque down the axle nuts. OMG!!! Why have I not been using a torque multiplier all my life? I can't believe how easy it was to torque down the axle nuts to 225 ft-lbs.
Physics is beautiful! |
