Welcome to the forum.
How about a few more pictures? Its hard to tell what the rear looks like from the one shot.
Now from the one shot, are you running a bug beam? The four lug wheels suggest that you are. With a bug beam and stock spindals, you usually see a 2 to 3" drop. Normally with dropped spindals and a bug beam, the car is really low. Here is my lowered car with a 2" narrowed bug beam, stock spindals but with the adjusters in the lowest position (rear is at stock height, I'll lower to the same as the front):
Here is a great thread to look at various slammed Things. Add yours when you get a chance.

Looks good as far as stance, but the rear is going to drop a little when you put the motor in.
4 lug rear also. Maybe the prior owner swapped out all of the 181 components for Bug stuff?
What's up with the air vents on your 74? Are they welded shut????
74s usually have a set of Hamsterbacken (aka Hamster Cheeks) in the rear corners to draw air:

The po removed the hamster cheeks, and put mesh screens in there place, I want to go back to the cheeks . Trying to finish up the motor, and mount the front seats.
Engine builder forgot the lower tin do you think this will be an issue. |

Yes if you want the cooling system to be effective. Pretty easy to put it in now. I would make sure all of your tin is in and buy new engine compartment seals (upper and lower) while your at it. Remember some German or Mexican engineer set these cars up to run efficiently 40+ years ago. Mesh screens and missing tin interferes with their master plan! |

Do you think that lower tin is a must? Does it sit above the push rod tubes below the heads,, what would it take to put them on??? |

I searched in the Thing gallery under "Tin" and didn't find much. Here is a diagram:
The lower tin sits below the pushrod tubes. If you are running heater boxes (from the looks of your fan shroud you are) the bottom tin screws in to the box, the case and then to the wrap around tin to the back side of the motor.

Chevy seats with integrated seat belts? IMO, they look out of place and too bulky. I like stock seats in a lowered car, or a set of PRP low backs.

Thanks for the info so far, does anyone have a pdf link to the tin, or a complete pic. I think the one above is missing some pics.
I'm likeing the seats , the built-in seat belts were what did it for me. And the price.

Hey GI Joe is that the tri-mill ceramic exhaust that exists thru the bumper? How's it sound? And do you know, is it true about carb iceing with a single carb set up with that exhaust. |

Just make sure you're beefing up the seat mounts extensively, to allow that structure to hold the seat in place with you strapped in it!! Those seat mounts are now taking ALL the force of a collision, rather than splitting it between seat mounts AND body(for the belts).....
Just a thought! I am sure they are comfy!![/quote]
I'm going with 2 bolts spread apart a little at each mounting point instead of 1, bolted and welded to the pan. Work in process. |

It Is the ceramic tri-mill style... It was too loud for my ears, and was removed before 1500 miles....and replace with a stainless split TTS system. I never had carb icing issues, still don't with my 1915 and stock 34 pict 3.....I can look at the muffler tomorrow, but I believe it had heat riser flanges.....maybe....?
I will say that I am not happy with the performance anymore... It was nice in the beginning, after a horrible battle with trying to get two sets of duals tuned(carb tuning to me, is like driving a race car to a blind person...just doesn't end well..)..
Looking for a single dellorto 40 right now... Last attempt before

I Highly suggest doubling up the mount area (I.e. Plating on inner and outer side of the pan... Or even running a bar from outer edge to center tunnel to mount the seats to... Even with two bolts at each point, they'll just tear a bigger piece of the pan sheet metal In a collision.... Your seat will not be secure at that point...and you will have Your mass, plus that if the seat moving together now..... No bueno, as our neighbors to the south say.....
Again, just wisdom and advice! Do with it what you will! Just buried a fellow Vdubber a few weeks ago, hate to lose another.... _________________ '74 Thing, "Our Thing"....
