Swapping dizzy with pertronix question

Hey there,

I had run an old German 009 in my 67 bus for many years with no issues. For the last 5 years it had a Flamethrower 1 electronic ignition. Since I was running a 34 pict 3 I switched to a Pertronix SVDA to try to avoid the stumble and it helped. I added the Pertronix 3 ohm Coil and wires as well.

I recently built a 1800 with 36 Dells. I have been loving how it drives. So under the category of "Why leave well enough alone." I wanted to see how it would run with the other dizzy's. I put the 009 with flamethrower 1 in and it cranked and idled roughly (I was eyeballing timing). Went to change timing and saw smoke under the dizzy cap. It was coming from the flamethrower module. Not sure what that was about but the electronics were super old.

So I also wanted to try a nice Bosch 034 I got a year ago. 0231170034 distributor with a good vacuum pot. I threw in the electronics from the flamethrower 2 SVDA and figured that the wires and timing would be the same/ similar to the Flamethrower SVDA (same direction for #1 on both) Set up like this, I could not get a spark. I even had my wife turn her over while I rotated the dizzy- nothing.

Am I missing something going from the Pertronix SVDA to the 034. The body seems the same and the electronics swapped nicely. I am also now remembering that I tried this with the 034 when I got it and there was no spark back then either.

Am I missing something? Thoughts?

If you are not getting s[park out of a particular distributor or replacement module it usually indicates a short within the distributor. If your module was emitting magic smoke it usually indicates the unit has been fried. I would suggest changing dizzy to distributor at least in the title. More response will result.

I'd replace the module with good ole points and condenser and try to get spark again from the 034.

Now, the German Bosch 034 uses a vacuum canister that requires 200 mm hg of vacuum to fully advance. Have you tested your carb/s to see if they are providing that much ported vacuum?

My apologies for making this more complicated than needed. I have a pertronix SVDA distributor that is working. I was interested in trying out a 034 0231170034 distributor with a good vacuum can. I swapped out the electronics to the old German distributor, but have not been able to get any spark. I put the electronics back in Pertronix and it worked fine.

It seems like the notch on old and new dizzy are in the same location. I twisted the dizzy a little while it was cranking and it still never sparked. The ground in the old German dizzy was still connected and I was told by a trusted source the -34 came from a working engine.

Wondering if I am missing something. May throw points on 034 to try, but the electronics work in the original dizzy.

Thanks Bill, I will do that this weekend. I had been trying to use the Pertronix electronic ignition I had been using and is known to work. I can try to points though for testing purposes, but I would ultimately like to end with the elctronic ignition.
