Hi guys.

Picked up my first T2 a few days ago.

Has been searching for a highroof camper t2 for a while and finally found one from 1975. It hade very little rust Wink

This will be my first VW build ( used to build Honda from the 90s for track use ) so I might need some help from you guys.

This is what it look like when I pick it up.

The day after pickup I started working on it, starting with paint .
Primer is now on, tomorrow we start with the paint.

I once had a chance to buy a fiberglass top for my 71 bus for about $200, easy to attachwith self-tapping screws and silicone. But, unfortunately my bus does not have an open roof so damaging cutting would have been involved. I am glad I didn't do it.
You don't see those hi-tops on the east coast. I am sure your will be fanstastic when you are finished.

That's pretty interesting! If I'm not mistaking, isn't that a Vanagon high top on that Bay?!

Dont know what model the high top is for or who installed it, all I know is that its a Reimo high top.

Yeah its quite ugly, but its really roomy, so wont be any problem for the kids to sleep up in the high top Smile

Turned out great, can't wait to see the final product. Seems like a very functional high top!

Here's one that is in Ontario. Seems to be an import from The Netherlands, brought here in the late 90's. Very unusual configuration for a Baywindow. Not much info available on it that I can find.

Windows, undercoating is done.

Took a look at the transmission and looks like the PO did a good job, so mounted it and mounted the clutch pedal etc.

So today I took a look at the heat exchangers and the Heater Control Pod.
They have seen better days. The piping in the exchangers looks fine, but there are holes in the cover and also some holes in the control pods.

Should I get new once? Can exhaust leak through? Or should I fix them up and paint them?

Hello Robin,

I see no construction to stabilize the cutted big hole in the roof. Shocked
So without it the body will be able to twist - be careful driving too much offroad...

Some have some extra contruction inside at the top
(see VW picture catalogue page 068-00 as e.g. parts 9 and 18 etc http://www.michaelknappmann.de/bulli/michaelk/vw_bus_d/fiche/t206800.html) -
and/or some have it below the car (see VW page 053-00 as parts 21 and 22 http://www.michaelknappmann.de/bulli/michaelk/vw_bus_d/fiche/t205300.html).

Not only my opinion and VWs as they build cars with these stabilizations -
seen this also with its effects as body cracks and tire issues at the Kombi Life channel: https://youtu.be/JcMZtMtM4BM?t=135 - and how they fixed it.

regards,

regards,

I agree that VW thought it necessary. I had a 1971 Dormobile that had belly pans. VERY difficult dealing with a rusty bus with belly pans, tho.
I always felt the best thing would be to find new replacements then screw and GLUE new ones in place with real body panel adhesive. Lord Fusor or SEM in the US. If one needs to gain access later heat will release the adhesive, I think. Probably from a heat gun. Much nicer than cutting welds.
I think Funky Green was making Bay pans?

I have seen the side belly pans at Bus Depot. I got one from Heritage in the UK. They told me it would fit. I haven’t really tried it yet. I don’t think KF makes them for Bay window. I’m not sure how different they are on splits.

I guess I really should find them for my bucket list 1970 Westy Lack of belly pans NOT its biggest problem. ( several ton tree branch fell on its windshield previous to my ownership).
A definitive link to replacement pans would be appreciated, If anyone has a link.
Also, one of the specialty fabricators like Jeff Gagnon probably could make to order.
Need 3 pieces total. left right and center.

Now I'm actively looking. The Bus Depot is out of stock on the JustKampers ones.
Anybody have lead on any of the 3 belly pan parts for a 1970 bus, I'm needing them

Did you have to remove the High Top to repair any of the metal on the roof?

I have a bad Rust spot from the way the camper was resting from the original owner. Just curious if you had any experience with removing the actual top? i know there are screws just curious if im going to get in trouble past that.

Thanks! any help or suggestions would be wonderful!
