I bought a 66 VW Beetle which is show quality. It has been in car shows in the past. The dealer said it’s worth $18,000 blue book value. My insurance only allows $4,000 unless I only show it and use in parades. I may not do too many shows or parades. I’ll drive it but not an every day driver. Sounds like I have to take to shows and parades and not drive it much to get a higher insurance value.
I also have a 71 Super Beetle being restored and my insurance agent said there is no value listed. So I’ll have a beetle with market value of at least $8,000 and no insurance value even though I am paying full coverage. I guess that doesn’t make sense to me. Does it to anyone else? |

Are you using your normal car insurance company? I use Hagerty for my older cars. Much cheaper and more flexible so you might give them a call. |

Thank you for the info. I’ll check them out. I use State Farm now. Only paying $174 every 6 months for each beetle for full coverage. But if they can’t give me a good insured value, it won’t want to continue with them. |

Uh, yeah. Hagerty.
Your current insurance company has no clue, or interest, in your classic cars. _________________ ---

Change your insurance quickly for your VWs
Grundy, Hagarty
Look up the values using NADA and using documentation and receipts or get an appraisal if necessary.
Do not underinsure! |

I also would recommend Hagerty. When I called them to add another classic, the rate didn't change, and it was handled under one policy. Just printed insurance cards and told them what amount I wanted for the coverage.

I have mine with Hagerty for the declared value I stated.
The higher the value the higher the premium. _________________ '72 Beetle |

Also make sure you are using an AGREED value, not stated. This is the amount that you WILL receive in a total loss. If you can get the provider to agree to a higher amount, within reason, do not under insure your vehicles. |

I checked Hagarty on Yelp.com and there are a lot of bad reviews from people who have made a claim. Maybe those people didn’t understand the policy? Is American Collectors Insurance good? Seems they have better reviews. Looks like a lot of members here have Hagarty though. |

Unfortunately there are those that can break a crow bar in a sand box, so hearing both sides of the story of the bad reviews would be interesting. From a repair shop point of view, Hagerty, and Grundy were among the few that simply said fix it, and send us the bill. Hagerty is a little more strict when it comes to storing your vehicle when not in use, and intended use. I don’t have any first hand experience with American Collectors. The main thing is to get an agreed value with a collectible type insurance. Mainstream companies will never pay the hourly repair rate of a shop willing to do a high end classic repair, undervalue your vehicle for the payout, only to then make money off the salvage auction sale for parts.
Also look into what happens to your vehicle if it gets totaled. Mainstream insurance in PA takes your vehicle, and if you want it back, you have to have the winning bid at the salvage auction. Most collector vehicle insurance companies can write up a policy clause that allows you to “buy back” your totaled vehicle for 10%-20% of the totaled amount. This needs to be brought up at the creation of the policy. |

I just switched from Progressive with only liability to Hagerty with comprehensive coverage and an agreed upon value for my ‘67 that totally covers me in the event of a total loss or theft to find a comparable car at above market price to replace mine. Very, very surprised at the price difference! Half of what I was paying Progressive with only liability. _________________ 67 Type 1

I have Hagerty on my 68 Turbo Bug. Only pay $200 / year with unlimited towing, which I've already used once. All of my peers with classic cars also use Hagerty. I couldn't recommend them enough!

American Collectors are also quite good but just not advertised so not as well known. I got a price quote from Hagerty for my 61 bug and 77 MG Midget and American Collectors was much cheaper for the same coverage. _________________ 1961 Bug, 2276 cb wedge ports 44x37 11.1 comp fk10 1.5 rockers 48idf's 1 3/4" header Rancho pro street trans SAW axles Airkewld 4# narrowed beam, Koni shocks, Airkewld dis brake all around. 5.5/4.5 BRMs

FWIW, my State Farm policy covers my classic cars/bikes for the declared value with better medical, uninsured motorist and property damage coverage than Hagerty, for the same amount of money. YMMV. |
