I did some camping with friends in a spot called High rock Bay at the eastern most part of the Keweenaw Peninsula this weekend. It was a pretty cool spot along Lake Superior. We had to take ATV/Off road trails to get to the camp site. Down another trail there was an old rocket range. Another spot had a skiff that you can take out to an island in the inland lake and camp on.
Then also a few pictures from in top of Brockway Mountain, it’s a really cool overlook of a lot of the peninsula, my pictures don’t do it justice.

Thanks! I looked at the picture of it in your gallery and it looks like it’s in amazing shape! Is it originally paint? I definitely like the tires, it hurts mpg a little and hurts acceleration a little but it’s worth it. I haven’t had the loose traction on anything off road.

Thanks! It’s definitely a lot of fun up here especially with all the places to camp and see. It does pretty good with all the hills even.

Thanks! It keeps ending up off the road though I’m just loving the bus and everything about it besides gas mileage I need to do a tune up.
Also, I realized I killed my drag link off roading. I went into town with my friend and I could hear a clunking in the steering after off roading. It was one of the original drag link ends and I think the off road shattered the internal bushing of it. But I ordered a new on and I’m going to install it tomorrow or Saturday. I also ordered the heater parts so I can have heat and those are supposed to get here tomorrow so then I can have heat
A few random pics I figure I’d add up
And a video, got a little three wheel action and it didn’t even slip

The video uploaded as a YouTube short so I didn’t want to work in the format so I trimmed it down. The short link should work for the entire view.
I looked at that thread and it looks like a pretty sweet trip, I’d definitely like to do something like that in the future.
I’m also think I may tackle raising the rear end of the bus up here, after you mentioned it’s starting to really bug me now I’d feel a bit more comfortable with a little extra ground clearance so I don’t hit the engine on a rock or something. _________________ 1964 sunroof Beetle Restoration "Herbie"

I know you are digging the “Rough boy” look with the the bumpers. But your bus is so nice looking, the bumpers want me to tell you,….. “You have something in your teeth” You did a great job! Enjoy how you like it. Looking forward to more fun post.

Yes it's original. Comes from Redding California and is now in Belgium. The engine is now a 2L GD though.... I also miss the fridge cabinet. |

Thanks! It’s always a fun adventure in it and I have yet to break down so that’s been good
I guess a few updates on other stuff for it, I replaced the drag link a while back, fixed that issue. But I think I’m going to go have a front end alignment soon and I’m going to adjust the carbs.
I also finished up the heater system and it works decent, it actually defogger the windage so that’s good But sadly the Eberspacher doesn’t fit with the carbs.
I also finally undercoated it a week or two back as I thought we were going to start getting more snow but it hasn’t happened yet. But I used a gallon of fluid film on it so it should be good
Along with lifting the back over Christmas break, I’m going to finish rebuilding the engine I have for it, the current engine is definitely a bit tired. I’m planning on getting a 6 rib transmission and put it in as the current 3 rib is popping out of 4th going up hills on occasion. I think a thrust plate would fix the issue but I also want the different gearing. I also think I’m going to put some new rotors on it as the current are a bit warped _________________ 1964 sunroof Beetle Restoration "Herbie"

Little break update, I got back from the College, the bus did well on the 450 mile trip back, I got some bad weather and there was a bunch of black ice and snow on the highway but it made it good. Passed three cars that went off the highway.
I got some new front rotors on. The old one were at ~0.4 inches and minimum spec is ~0.45 so they were over due. I put the new ones on and it brakes way smoother now and no more shuttering.
I also lifted the rear suspension, it may need a little more still but I lifted it 4 degrees, about an inch and a quarter. I also took the torsion bars out, wire wheeled them off, treated them with oshpo and painted them with plasti-dip. I also put on new suspension bushings/ donuts, the old ones were worn out. I also lubed them up with some talcum powder
It also got a good wash since it got filthy on the trip back and the final results of the lift

So… I may have landed myself a free bus. A friend at college said his grandpa had a bus in his woods, over the last few months I’ve been asking about it and got one pic. Last night my friend said that his grandpa said I could have it It is a later model Westfalia pop top and I think it is a 74-75. It was driven to its resting spot a long time ago, they had to cut trees out around it he said. It’s a three hour drive each way to get it and has no title but free is free and I’m pretty sure it’s complete

We will see depends on the condition of everything, if it becomes a project, one of my other cars will need to go. If it’s rotted out, I may just have a new transmission for my bus Also if it’s an automatic bus I will not keep it

No, my school is in about the most northern part of the upper peninsula of Michigan, it is a beautiful place and the school is along a canal and it’s super hilly and winding up there. _________________ 1964 sunroof Beetle Restoration "Herbie"

Got back for Christmas break and got to work, I decided to do a little compression test on the engine and it was ~150 on three cylinders and 130 on one so that was an improvement from the original compression test on the engine I was going to put in my rebuilt one but I may stick with this one with some improvements.
First task was drop the engine and transmission. I got a thrust plate to hopefully stop it popping out of fourth as the nose cone was a bit pounded. I also wanted to do some other stuff on the engine. Didn’t take terribly long to get the engine out. I took the old muffler off first as it is getting scrapped for now as it has some rust holes and I got a “new” header system. Also, I’m ditching the Weber’s and going fuel injector, eventually the plan is micro squirt, but for now I am going to try to find some L-jet parts and get that system setup and eventually convert it to Micro Squirt. I don’t like the Weber cold starts and the 44s are too big. I’d rather have the fuel injection and get better mpg.
Here’s the start from in the bus to out
Then the nose cone, you can see how pounded it is. I took 80 grit sandpaper on glass (an old bug window) to start to take material away, it still took a while to get it even. Then I did 150 followed by 220 grit paper so it was smooth. It turned out good and I stuck it back together with the thrust plate. Ended with a big pile of magnesium shavings, may have to burn them
