I know nothing about the rack---------but it has been a long time since I last saw a turquoise refrigerator. |

Picked up some scrap aluminum, printed out a few pictures of the modern replacement hardware for the newer racks, and I'll make up some brackets to mount this thing. Still waiting on my new cylinder heads so may as well kill some time and still be productive on this car
Here it is mocked up. There are a couple holes down in the stock bumper brackets that will be a perfect spot to put an 8mm bolt to attach the rack. just need to bend up some brackets for the top and figure out a nut for behind the vents.

Bent up a couple pieces of 1/8" by 1" aluminum scrap and drilled them for bolts. Need to get some thicker"C" or angle channel to make the brackets and flip them inside the vents. I think some 1/4" thick stock should be enough to drill and tap for 6mm bolts. I bolted them together after drilling the first hole, finished the second, then ground/filed them at the same time so they match.
Looks pretty good for scrap metal from the cutoff bin at work! These will work for now, and I'll keep an eye out for some stainless to make nicer versions later. _________________ 73 super beetle thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=649622 Back on the Road!

I cut up some aluminum angle, drilled and tapped them, and finally got around to mounting my decklid rack in anticipation of show and camping season. They're rough for now, but I'm going to round over the edges and polish them soon. The actual l-bracket is thinner than I would like, so I want to make a thicker set and polish them up, or maybe paint them black.
The decklid rack doesn't make a noticeable difference in stability at highway speed, and doesn't sound too noisy- just a subtle *vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv* sound when going 75 or faster. Can't wait to make up some fishing rod holders to clamp to the sides for day trips with the kids!
I do think that I want to make up some extensions for the bottom mounting section, and add some locking wing nuts so that I can quickly remove the rack if needed. It does block access to the engine partially- you can only open enough to check the oil but little else. I don't plan to leave the rack in place all the time- mainly for events and trips, so I think with some tweaks it will work well. _________________ 73 super beetle thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=649622 Back on the Road!
