I have a 71 Super Beetle convertible that is about ready for paint. I had an estimate done and was given a quote of 2000 to 2500. Of course that would be if I bought the paint and materials first. I don't want a show quality paint just so all fenders, doors, etc. are one original color (Marina blue). Much of car is currently in primer. Does this sound like a reasonable cost to you?

Body work is very expensive. It takes a lot of man hours to get the car straight and ready for paint. If you don’t prep it right and make it straight you will not be happy with the end result. Blocking and sanding takes hours per panel. So as you can tell from my run in sentence, it’s all prep you’re paying for. Most times materials are the least expensive part of painting

I’m doing a Ghia right now. No metal repair and light bodywork, probably have 40 hours into it and need to block one more time.
And then I have to shoot it, cut and buff...
If that price is simply to shoot and do no other work on the car I’d say it’s high, if it includes some light bodywork and cutting and buffing I’d say it’s cheap.

What he said. If that is a drop it off and pick it up price that is extremely cheap...

It does include some light body work. I already have many hours into prep work (too much to count). I am not an expert so he included some light work (if needed, when he looked gave some suggestions, to improve or address prior to paint ) in his estimate. He would also be taking fenders off and painting those separate. Currently does mostly muscle cars from 60's, but has done beetles in past. Small rural area not a lot of competition around. Thank you for your input.

I thought this might be a decent thread to ask about costs.

All things being equal - same quality, paint etc,

Which type of paint job would cost less? Any by about % less.

Single stage or color and clear coat?

thanks

Peter

Single stage in theory, less time to complete the job.

Single stage in theory, less time to complete the job. Maybe two hour difference?

He lives close, so you can keep an eye on his work.
Keep all the parts at your place and re-assemble it yourself.
2000-2500 sound fair as he's a good bodyman/painter & you've seen his work.
