Looks good. Lots of spots for hooks or lights etc. Roo bar on top or recess in some 'D' shackles. I'm a big fan of the swing away rear mounted spare like the Vanagon guys have.

Nice NACA duct by the way.

Go for the tow hook. Not sure for the spare on front, a rear swing out tire carier looks awesome!

I also like the rear mount box and spare tire carrier. My concern is to much weight on the back between the bigger engine and trans and the trailer. I don't want to have the rear end dragging. This is also why I went with the under mount for the fuel tank.

I ordered some D-ring mounts and weld on tie down brackets. I think it should beef up the look of the bumpers. Tomorrow is another run to Alro Steel. Its crazy how much its costing me to fabricate all these parts. I just need to keep my eye on the prize of having a great vehicle for some epic road trips.

Phase one of the trailer hitch, just mocked up to see if I like the look. I will still need to come up with a bumper idea to make it work.

Why did you choose a 1 1/4” tongue for you hitch? That trailer looks heavy.

Good question Rich, I went back and fourth on 1 1/4" and 2" and at the end of the day the 1 1/4 was rated at 300lb tongue weight and 3500lb total weight capacity. The trailer fully loaded should come in between 1700-2000lbs with a tongue weight of 125-150lb. Considering the original rating for the bus with a much weaker trailer hitch set up was 125lb tongue and max of 2500lb GVW. All that being said I felt the 1 1/4" will get the job done. Plus I already had one in the shop from a brand new hitch I bought last year. I played around with some upper plates last night that I can use the old engine cradle bar mounting holes to add some additional strength to the hitch.

I'm enjoying the ride, so might as well chip in. I'm with you that it should contrast and rough up the look of the bus, but adding a little softness to it should help settle it better on the bus. I also think the angle is too sharp. Here's a few quick mock-ups that might help. The second one would be my choice.

I opted to change the rear bumper/ hitch from one piece to two pieces. My thought process was it would be easier to powder coat it and if there was any damage it would be easier to have two less than crazy heavy items to remove. Here is what I came up with. What do you think

I’m back, had to take the last month off to take care of some non VW items. It’s good to be back out in the shop though. Tonight I knocked off the weld slag and test fit the flood lights up front and the back up lights in the rear bumper.

I recognize that getting nuts and bolt isnt a huge deal but boy does it make the build go so nice starting with fresh hardware. I also positioned the bus in the shop in anticipation of my transmission parts arriving in the coming weeks so I can stab the engine and transmission in place. I think in the coming nights I’ll focus on getting the dash installed the last of the electrical and maybe installing the fuel cell.
