Progress looks great! What color will you be painting the bus?

That's a really good question. On my last couple of builds the color decision took months to finalize. So here is what i think about this one. I like the color of this Tacoma for the bottom half and pastel white from the waist up. If i add black wheel and the black roof camping set up it might off set such a sedate color. Maybe a vinyl enlarged tire tread pattern going diagonal. I could also do Savanah Beige and Pastel white. What do you all think??

Tonight i removed the bulkheads from behind the seats, spot welded in the swivel base, and spotted in the patch panel for the floor. I am also test fitting the Tribeca seats. Amazingly they are very comfortable and fit very well. Since this is going to be a long hull kind of vehicle i wanted to go for comfort vs originality. Plus having power adjustability is surely a plus. Another week of body work and I should be ready for primer and final blocking. Its amazing how much quicker each subsequent bus gets. My first one i did bodywork for 6 months. I guess i have learned a thing or two over the years.

Lately I have been pulled away from the bus build on other builds. Now that they are completed its time to dive back into the bus and trailer. This week I decided to build the trailer to be pulled behind the bus. This will store all the camping gear and my motorcycle. My inspiration is Overland trailers that seem to be all the rage lately. Purpose build self contained trailers meant to make getting off the grid easier. Here is the progress so far

the roof section is coming together nicely. I still am working on sourcing the side honeycomb panels. I am also using them for the floor. Any chance I can do to save some weight. Current tongue weight is 76lbs.

Have any of you used a 31" tire on a bus before? I am trying to figure the offset for a wheel and tire set. I have to buy 7 now with trailer so I want to make sure they are correct

That is a great start. I love it when tings are repurposed. Be carful of where the axel is and where the weight will get placed.

I agree with you 100%, I am putting a fresh and grey water tank between the frame rails to help with keeping the tongue weight balanced. I have had trailers fish tail before and there are few things that scare you at 70 like that. I am also installing electric brakes so that I can tap them if things get a bit crazy. Not sure if the electric actuator will work with the OEM drums or I might just install the whole electric drum set up.

Your bus is exactly the height I am going for. did you do a suspension
lift like riser plates in the rear or torsion tube notching? I am doing the AWD in two phases. First get the bus going down the road with bus suspension and next winter finish building the AWD kit. I am finding that the AWD portion is going to take 100's of hours of fab work and engineering. I think being able to drive my bus will motivate me during the AWD fab time.

I used a Wagens West lift kit. The spindles are lifted and has blocks at the rear.

Having any project remain as a driver always keeps the interest up. Wink Cool

Two more question about your bus, from the looks of the picture you are running stock wheels? With Nates lift kit do you have any rubbing concerns. The reason I ask is because now is the perfect time for me to index the wheel wells if needed.

Stock? No brother. They are 15"s. They are VW steelies from one of their lines Passat or Jetta. I chose these because they have a stock offset close to the stock 14"s. I believe the Originals have an ET of 38, these are ET37. When it was stock height and I put the bigger rims and tires on - they did rub on the trailing arm when turning. Since the raise, the bus steers way lighter and there is zero rub, lots of clearance.

IIRC the most common ET38 steelies are from the B5/B5.5 Passat 4motion. ET45 was on the FWD Passat and I needed a ~3mm spacer up front to keep from rubbing the sway bar and/or trailing arm (I forget which one) at full lock with 205/70R15 tires.

Yeah, I thought I was going to get those ET45's like the Vanagon crowd was pimping as well. Then I found the 37's.

Not a bus, but I have 31x10.5R15's on my syncro. Hope this helps.

Great build BTW, so awesome Cool

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=2028265

Front wheels are 15x7 with a 5.25" backspacing. I currently have them bolted to 1" thick adapters for A-arm clearance. Rear wheels are 15x10, 5.0" backspace & no adapters.

Thank you for all your advice on tires. I have selected 27 8.5 14 General Grabbers. The reason for this is a slight off road style of them and I can use them with out doing the suspension lift. I have mounted up two of them for the trailer. So the trailer is coming along slowly, I had to swap the left and right hub assembly so that the shock mount would allow greater ground clearance. When I adjusted the swing plates lower I also had to cut and remount the swing arm brackets. Everything is only tacked in place for the mock up and will get final burnt in later. The tongue weight is still hovering around 60 lbs. My goal is to have it max at 125lbs, with a custom torque distributing hitch it should have good road manners. I also installed the bike rack hitch mount. One step at a time. One item I did on the bus it installed the NACA duct for the radiator system. I know that there is a ton of debate about cooling and radiator mounts. I had success with a 300hp V6 a couple of buses ago so I am going to do this one the same.
