This is a email question and response about mounting my Winterburn under the dash on my 61 beetle.

Hi Fred, got a ???? Is there any downside to running the two high voltage wires from under your dash mounted cdi to the back of my VW beetle coil. I like the idea of being able to go back and forth from Cdi to points/condenser while driving. Wires will be kinda long but high voltage is good at that. Just want to confirm my thinking. Answer:

Dan, Yes you can. I would separate the wires from each other as much as possible to reduce capacitive coupling. If the wires are run in separate plastic looms or sheaths that should provide enough separation. Don't wind them together like you see on some installations as that WILL increase capacitive coupling as well as increasing inductance that won't cancel any capacitance. Try to especially run the green CDI wire separately from the brown and yellow wires. I would suggest the red wires and black wires can be kept short if going that route. No need to run them to the back of the car. FYI, When selected to CD, the brown wire is grounded via the switch and the black CDI wire. The SCR discharges the capacitor to ground with the return path via the yellow CDI wire. Go with #14 wire for long lengths so there are fewer losses if you have to select to STD for any reason. Let me know how you make out. Fred

I mounted mine on the firewall, right above the fan:

Mounted my Winterburn CDI under the backseat to a backboard, ran the CDI wiring to a terminal block so i can change/alter the setup if need be in the future.

I've notice that the sparkplugs run alot cleaner. I could never get the NGK D6EA plugs looking lighter than Black. First run with the CDI and the plugs came out clean and white showing that the increased spark is completing the combustion burn. I'm running dual 44 idf's on a 2161, 42x37.5 ported heads, and C-45 cam.

I also notice that after a 20 mile run the bosch blue coil was only slightly warm, wereas you couldn't touch it when i was just running bosch 019 w/ blue coil.

Really glad i made the switch to the WinterBurn CDI.

My '73 Thing has a pretty roomy engine compartment (at least when compared to that of a Beetle).

My Winterburn CDI is mounted on a ABS plate at the forward bulkhead.
This photo was made during setup.
The threaded posts are for terminals 15 ,1 and 31. The fuse is for the reverse lights. Thanks VW, for putting a million M5 studs all over the place on that forward bulkhead.

My opinion is that the best place for any electronic device is to put it out of the engine compartment. This is why alot of electronic device distributors don't last in a hot enviroment.

Ever notice that you never see a MSD box near heat?
