I pulled the filler, not sure why I let it intimidate me, not bad.
Crusty plate for the cap, I’m cleaning up now, rubber grommet is toast:
Garbage in metal section of filler:
Garbage in rubber section of filler:
Cracks in rubber:
Is my only option some exhaust tubing to replace the rubber bend? _________________ Ron

Gas tank is back out, with engine in.
Apparently I did a substandard job cleaning the tank. The top was not cleaned well and still shows gunk.
Going to see what I can do and not soak myself. _________________ Ron

The exhaust pipe mod is the best option, that way you can use known quality straight hose, either the Sprinter parts, or a length from NAPA.
Sorry to hear about the tank, but better to find it now. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I can't believe I am trying to clean this again and not ordering a new one...
What can I use to plug the holes for a good soak, possibly with hot water and TSP, or maybe diesel fuel or e85? _________________ Ron

You'll likely need something a bit more potent to get it really clean: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=378770
As or plugs Home depot has plumbing test caps that fit the filler neck, sender holes can be plugged with a small yogurt cup or similar tapered plastic thing, kiddie sippy cup?, sex toy?, use your imagination with what's on hand. A glove stuffed full of paper even works in a pinch. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I’ve got the tank clean and installed. New pipes and hoses.
Now I need to learn more about the charging system. I thought the positive off of the alternator was going to the starter, but it didn’t actually get that far and was taped up.
Now I have it going to the positive on battery and not getting a charge. _________________ Ron

When I took it out the other day, I thought it ran till the battery gave up.
Turns out my problem is bigger, I think I locked it up. _________________ Ron

Well that sounds dismal, have you tried turning the engine with the alternator nut?, or by pushing the bus in 4th gear? Don't try using the bolts in the fan hub, overtorque or snap one of them and you'll have even more problems. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Unfortunately yes. It used to spin easily from the alternator 22mm, now it won’t.
On the ground and in gear, I can’t push it.
Now I think the starter is in fact extending, but unable to move the flywheel.
I was expecting shrapnel in the oil and strainer, but to my tired and upset eyes the oil looked ok.
Unless there are other suggestions, I’m going to start pulling it back out tomorrow. _________________ Ron

Maybe try a fresh battery first, if the starter is stuck mid start it could drag it down somewhat and make it hard to turn. But usually a push in 4th disengages it, hmmm....
Were the oil and charge lights working before the drive? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I pulled the batter and starter and had them tested at FLAPS, hoping they were my issue. They both tested as good. _________________ Ron

I repurposed a furniture Dolly with just an extra piece of plywood, its a hair too low, but I can still force the floor Jack under it.
It took me about two hours to get it up in the air, unhooked and dropped.

Exhaust removed, four nuts up top, four nuts under cover.
I can get the heads and cylinders to move but not come off, what am I missing?

Stuck with carbon and crud. Get a rubber hammer and slowly tap side to side and top to bottom. But not on the fins. _________________ 1972 Bus 1700 cc Single Carb. But not a progressive.

I misunderstood and didn’t remove this tray that screws to the block, the cylinders and has a curved section that holds the heads back.
I can’t get the screws to break loose yet.

Three bolts to remove the fan, four bolts to remove the fan shroud, made it easier for me to get to all the tins for removal.
I only got the one side done, the other side tin is still soaking in penetrating oil.
These two pistons move in the cylinder.
