Years and years ago, I had a 1971 bus that had a fuel line petcock between the tank and the fuel filter. I found it very handy when changing out the fuel filter (which is in front of the engine, not in the engine compartmennt), since I could shut off the gas when replacing the filter. I also used it when I needed to park the bus and leave it unattended, like at an airport parking lot.

I sold that bus, petcock and all, back in 1994. When I got my present bus, I was reminded of how convenient it was, and have developed a strong hankering to install one on the bus. Can anybody recommend a source for such a thing? It would have to have the proper nozzle sizes (7 mm, I think).

An electric fuel cutoff is another way to go and you don't have to crawl underneath to disarm it.

I'm currently resurrecting a 69 that had one on it. Appears to be the exact same one that is on my generator.
Possibly find one in the small engine side of things.

For a 1971 I believe the proper size would be 5.5mm and not 7mm

Just get a fuel line pincher from your FLAPS. Might take 30 more seconds to clamp off the line but no chance of a fuel leak.

Rethinking this. Why wouldn’t it just fly away when you go to drive it?

Dave, when it comes time to cut lines for any reason, you’ll also find solace in cutting on the wrong side of the perfectly-crimped clamp and take a gas bath anyway.

I have a fuel rated valve obtained from the lawn mower section in the local hardware store, installed between the fuel filter and tank supply.

i bought one for a mower that was losing its prime due to a wonky fuel pump. it did not help. i discovered why after i tried something else. the damn thing leaked thru when "off"
it was this one.

I don't have a bus. For my buggy I also used one from a lawn mower.

I just stopped by a local hydraulic hose company and picked up a couple ball valves for a few $'s each.

And the best defense you can have for a vehicle fire.

Gravity fed gas tanks lead to the death of many of Volkswagen.

There's a reason no other manufacturer creates vehicles like this.

Inboard marine engine are required to have anti siphon valves or other devices to prevent gravity from emptying the tank into the hold of a boat. There are on demand devices that the manufactures claim to be better than the simple anti siphon valves, anti siphon valves being are nothing more than spring loaded check valves with a fairly light spring pressure.
