I've attached pictures of the rear passenger ash tray from my 1967 type1. I've had it put away for quite awhile and now that I'm ready to install it I find I cannot attach the door to the base. I can't find how the door attaches to the base.
I've looked through the search Forum and found only questions about the assembly. Does anybody out there have a picture of the hinge or missing part? I don't see anything on the inside of the door that would even accept a hinge or pin. I even have an extra ash tray without a hinge as well! Does anyone have a picture of the assembled unit? Thanks |

that's because you're missing the actual ashtray itself with its spring/stub out plate that fixes to the back of the cover _________________ "we're here on Earth to fart around" kurt vonnegut

I've never seen that style ashtray in any mid-'60s Bug. I've only seen this style:
The ones with the knob/handle are older, I think.

But I agree in any case that there is no hinge required, and the tray is missing. |

Definitely a convertible ashtray. Picture is of a factory original "1967 only" CONVERTIBLE right rear 1/4 panel with the ashtray in place. If memory serves me correctly this style of rear ashtray was used on convertibles from 1958 - 1968. Perhaps it doesn't matter to the OP, but I do believe that since his ashtray has the "gray" colored plastic pull knob, it was for an earlier model convertible - from the early 60's and not for a 1967. The 67's have a "whiteish-cream" colored pull knob. At least mine does, and all the other 67's I've seen do too. Maybe "AirCooled" can verify this on his all original 67 convertible?

Ah yes. I'll look on the pile of parts I have on my work bench. I'll bet my missing ash tray piece is buried there. I have two 67 VW convertibles. One driver and the other for parts. Both had the ash trays and both had the gray knob. I haven't really focused on the ash tray when viewing other cars and car shows but I wasn't working on them at that point. I can't confirm that I've seen the cream colored version. Thank you to all for your information and pictures that has helped considerably. |
