Here is my new to me VW rail project. I have no clue what it is, but for the price, I couldn't pass it up. If anybody knows what it is, Please chime in. I believe its a 1300. Should be fun around the property and at the dunes. ID number on the transaxle is 9762309.

You ara right its a "thing" not to be confused with a "Thing".... Might be one of a 100 different designs that has come and gone.... With single hoop roll bar it sort of dates it as a early sand/woods buggy/rail...

I think that a Wallabug (I think that was name for it) made by Hooker Headers in the late 1960s to early 1970s.
I remember seeing a picture of one in a dune buggy magazine.
I trying to find the magazine with it in it.
This was about the time Gil George left Hooker Headers and started Funco and the building of the Wampuskitty buggy for off road racing.
Nice find, part of the early buggy history.
Also looks like an original Moon fuel tank
The engine is or was a 1300cc with the F in front of ID numbers _________________ Joseph

It is a Hooker Headers Wallabug buggy.
I found the pictures of it Petersen Publications Book
"The Complete Book of Volkswagen" This is book number 1. There are 3 later books from Petersen that are Listed as #2, #3, and #4.
The first book does not say #1 on the cover and has a print date of 1969
In the book it show 3 picture of the Wallabug, two are on the chassis from the side showning front and rear and one showing from the right side a completed build. All in black and white.
If they do another Old School Buggy Reunion, it would be a great one to have there to show people. _________________ Joseph

OMG YES! It is a Wallabug. It just went into the garage. I will be repairing it back to factory spec as best I can. It is in fact a Moon eyes tank. I would love to see more pictures of one from that book. I cant seem to find any info on these. Are there any more left? |
