Laughing thanks. been a long slow road for sure. especially when you thought you had all the "this and that" things done and ready for install....like the grill for example

i thought i had all the cardboard air guides dialed in.... only partially true. i had the ones for the radiator done, but not the grill

these had plastic titties that were melted to mushroom heads from the factory to hold the cardboard in place basically making replacement about impossible.

i had some super thin (1/16 iirc) aluminum angle kicking around so i ended up making brackets and using some of 3M's *finest* panel bond to glue them to the grill. totally booty, but the only way i could figure a sane way to make the deflectors stay in place.

it was fun trying to clamp them to the grill, which is a almost perfect original but holy shit...it's made of glass. not sure how good the aftermarket ones are but this thing is fra-geee-lee for sure

i laid it out and bolted it in place

i made the ones for the radiator a long time ago. other than being dusty they went right in

nose is almost done. buffed the hell out of it and swapped the old bumper for a better (nowhere near perfect) bumper.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

also got the power mirrors installed. 100% killed me to drill the lower hole and i was going to go without but here again i couldn't find a decent way to took the cap on. the caps have a ear that sits on top of the lower screw. another fine vw shitbag design but whatever

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

i had routed the main harness for the mirrors in the van already and thought "gee, these mirrors should go right on" yea...NO. between drilling the doors for the harness, unpinning connectors etc it was a bit more than i thought.

then trying to find a decent pic of where the switch lived was a bit of a pain. i took photos from the guy i got them from but it was still a bit hard to tell. then cutting the hole for the switch was another pain to do without making a huge mess

my K&N condom came in so i was able to get that dialed in and the tail light back in

getting there. still haven't driven it. in fact, i haven't even started it since the video.

right now i'm arguing with Grundy about an agreed value. seems they will insure it no problem, but they are coming in way too low. like used up camper kind of low.

once i get that sorted i'll be off to DMV

I used Hagerty for my recently acquired 84 tintop. They accepted my value of $6k without batting an eye. Maybe check them out.

Nice van, and work btw, from a fellow CT'er.

Cheers!

If he accepts $6k as the value for his van I will be at his front door step with the cash as fast as I can get there.

I was just pointing out that my van, which is considerably less valuable, didn't need any special justification for my $6k replacement value.

And I was pointing out, in a roundabout way, that the issue is that his van is considerably more valuable and does need special justification for the increased price. If he said $6k the insurance company would just say ok as well, but they are currently balking at whatever number he is throwing at them.

Apologies for not being a little more direct!

Hey no worries Smile

I wonder what they would say if you tossed out a $20-30k number. I've heard they need pics and other documentation to justify certain numbers.

I honestly never bothered to look at the actual value of my van. I just figured the cost I had into it, and took a guess.

thanks! i may have to try them. i have all of my other stuff with Grundy and figured this would be a non issue. my 71 westy is at 25k, 71 single at 22k and 70 deluxe at 65k all agreed value. (or something to that effect, i don't have the paperwork in front of me)

i wanted to put this van at 45k. they told me 22k. no fucking way could you buy a van built to this caliber for 22k. i may have to link them to the build and add up all of my receipts.

45k may be a bit ambitious and i figured my jumping off point would be about 35-38k

not sure why they are coming in so low. when i built my deluxe i didn't even have the full interior done yet and sent them photos of it 'under construction' and they had no problem with it.

My guess is that the insurance companies have seen the splitty and bays go up in value and are OK with the new values. Likely less so for Vanagons so far. Worst case is pay someone for an appraisal if you have to get higher value than they will readily go.

There's a splitty on ebay right now that is at 148k asking!

Well I've got $6k and some pocket lint if you change your mind. LMK! Laughing

I'm not sure why they are balking at 45k, plenty of nice Vanagons go for that price now.

I moved our 82 to Haggerty in the last couple months. I had the impression that I could pick any value and just pay a higher premium. $25K seemed like an amount we could live with if the van disappeared never to be seen again.

lmao... i have seen interiors listed for 6k. no pocket lint tho Laughing

i thought 45k was a reasonable number for a early non syncro no a/c automatic westy especially given the overall originality and lack of rust and the level of quality parts that went into it.

they'd be hard pressed to find me a NOS radiator i bet

that's how it seemed to work when i did my deluxe.... pick a number and pay the price. not sure why the change of heart.

no way could i stroke a check and buy a van like this for 25k....

granted i'd never get my labor back....not a snowballs chance in hell on that but i'd at least like a stab at buying another van in the same condition should some asshole on autopilot in their tesla clean me up

for $45k for a Assuan brown van they're probably thinking your just going to light it on fire in 6 months..

I'd think the same..

as you mentioned there are no comps.. and well they don't care one iota about a NOS radiator.

keep at them and let us know.. but they're not your friend.. and they don't expect a owner to play fair either.

You probably need to find another agent or insurance company.
Hagerty is a good choice, yes you pick an amount, however, they do underwrite to ensure its within reason.

Yep. They will not let you pay a premium for an agreed value of $100,000 for that Vanagon, and then it is stolen......

you would not do that but there are folks in this world who would.

my agent is a fucking animal. working on another agreed value policy for the 70/71/71 and the vanagon. as of 6:00 tonight it looks like i'll win. not only that but it will only cost another 150 for the year on top of my other 3, so basically 1100/year and all agreed value policies.

once i'm all dialed in i'll tell Grundy to eat my policy with a big helping of grundle butter. pricks...been with them since '08-09. it was time to shop anyway.

started the daunting task of buffing. this is the pits...

as expected the factory paint looks like it was put on with a roller but it's coming back to life very well.

You know what they say about “Polishing a turd” Wink

Looks great. Really well done. Are you going to dial in this van to perfection to avoid camping???
Get out there and mess it up in the brush off roading the trails seeking out the most exquisite Instagram photos Laughing Then polish it up in the shop when the first Nor'easter hits. You dig? Just go camping brother. And for fuck sake, no socks and sandals Shocked
