Related to my previous post about mattress thickness and firmness (https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=743362), I now need assistance or recommendation on the L x W of foam pad needed to put in the cover.
Im planning to order a rectangular piece of 4 thick, Lux foam High Quality and trimming the cutouts for the AC pillar moldings. I realize I can just order wider and longer piece and then trim the width and length to fit but Id prefer not to add in that variable, as I can always F it up. Measuring the covering I get roughly 68 wide by about 38 long. Anyone know the actual measurement of the covered foam? Id hate to have to cut an inch off, or be a couple inches short, ya know what Im sayin?? Thanks bubbas! _________________ 1987 Westy, Dove Blue

I had my topper cut to "queen size" and it's almost perfect. Just a touch long. Every post I've seen on this says that just go with queen size and it works. _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL 2.1 AT Westfauxlia. Dave, before I make the final cut...how does it look? One dimension I wasnt sure of- is the cutout area even all the way across? Not tapered or flared out towards the end? Your pic looks like it might be, but could just be the angle.
Thanks again!

My dogs have claimed the mattress as their own.

It only tapers if you have AC.

I have AC.
So youre saying the cutout area isnt an even 56.5 along all points of the cutout? Do you happen to know if it tapers smaller than 56.5 or flares larger than 56.5 at the end of the foam?
In my edit of Daves pic, the blue marker shows the end that is less than 56.5, and the red is wider. The lines are exaggerated of course!

DO NOT CUT to the size of the space.
Buy an electric carving knife at a tag or church sale. $5 would be a high price, but there is no other way to do it. It cannot be cut with sizzors or a sharp knife,
The foam has to be bigger so it pushes against the fabric. Otherwise you have wrinkles. The fabric wants to be the correct size, but the foam should be bigger by 1" side to side and 3/4" front to back. It's better to cut the foam too big and then sneak up on it. The density of the foam determines how much bigger is should be. Knowing how to do this comes with experience. You are going to only have one experience, so lean on the experts. Foam ain't cheap and cutting it too small is a bummer--not the end of the world as you can piece some slivers in, but do it right first. And I would make it smaller overall by a half inch as you need room to tuck the bed clothing in. Otherwise, the mattress will bunch up at the sides. For advice call SailRite. They have all the materials, foam, fabric, zippers, correct threads------AND advice. They do a ton of boat cushions. That's what you're making--yacht cushions--a land yacht.

Thanks for the tips Duncan. Im pretty confident the measurements are right since Dave O had his foam out of the cover and measured for me. The only question I have is what I mentioned above. Taper or flare??
Well, I did it. Cut the foam to the measurements Dave gave me and its damn near perfect. It was tough getting it in but once all the nooks and crannies got filled, damn near perfect I tell ya! Thanks everyone!
