Just picked up this cool shifter. I assume it's an old Bugpack one. However, it uniquely says "Genuine Volkswagen". Has anyone seen one of these before. Could it possibly be "genuine Volkswagen"?

It looks like one a few knockoffs of a Berg design- very similar in base and shaft. And I fully agree with haz77- a very gifted electric engraver. One off I'm sure.

I guess you could take it apart and scrutinize the parts to rule Berg in or out.

Ive had one of these before. Its an old Bugpack Magnum shifter. Made in the USA alongside the Gene Berg shifters but when sold new, the cost was a little less. Construction is very solid and unlike the Scat shifter, the shaft is one piece. Identical to Berg.

Thanks everyone for their replies thus far. I will take more photos of the shifter taken apart. If it is Berg should there be markings in a certain spot? How about if it is a Bugpack too? Also can anyone point me to where I can find a replacement shifter boot? I've seen some but they are all for the square shaft EMPI shifters. Regarding the unique handle, who in their right mind would spend that much time to do something like that? In person it looks like the markings were cast and just worn down from years of use. I thought for sure that would be the dead giveaway on what the shifter is. Any clue of the age of something like this?

The 70s were heavy times man. I see stuff like this all the time. But consider, would anyone market a handle that required "Genuine Volkswagen" be spelled out? I don't know for sure- but a strong hunch still says HS industrial arts project.

Try a Berg boot- I verified with my shifter and the base and shaft are uncannily similar. Don't overthink the art project handle- just put it in your display case before anyone sees it. Smile

Below are some teardown pics of my shifter. I looked pretty thoroughly and do not see any markings for BugPack or Gene Berg, who knows? Regardless I will get a new boot, repaint, polish and enjoy.

The Berg shifter boot fit perfectly not to mention the nylon bushings I ordered from them.
