So,
In the overall scheme of things,
This car is really ready to be resprayed IMHO.
Just like you said, if you have a nice dash, good mats, new headliner, new seals and...
The rest of it looks wrong beside it.
Let's see more pics of the nether regions buffed out;
Inside the frunk, door jambs, etc.
If all that stuff shines up nicely,
And you're getting the interior looking nice here soon,
I'm thinking that a 'sympathetic exterior re-spray' would be exactly the ticket.
And,
It will also set the stage for getting other crappy parts up to snuff over time.
That would all just be icing on the cake.
You are in a rather unique position in which to be able acquire some of the stuff the car needs, after all.. |
Yeah, you and Bob pretty much nailed it. I think it's gonna be pretty extensive for a "preservation," but "restoration" just doesn't feel right.
The plan is to spray the exterior for the most part. The hoods and doors will be painted completely, and we'll shoot the door jams from the lip out. Same with the frunk and trunk. The trunks, dash, engine area, and interior will stay original paint. Those areas are too nice, and I'm not really trying to do a body-off restoration right now. I really liked how Aaron left his dash original paint as a tribute, sort-of. I'd like to replicate that with this car.
We're gonna fix the front hood issues. One, it's original to the car and two, we don't have anything better in stock. The passenger door lower hinge has broken off inside the pillar, so that has to be fixed. It's really common on these early cars. It kinda works out that we're painting the door jams anyway. Pans are getting fixed with some of our replacement sections that came with it. After that we'll undercoat it. Interior rust, pictured on page 1 is also getting fixed.
The wiring harness is getting replaced with one of our ISP kits. It's in pretty good shape, but with it staying 6V I'd rather start fresh and make sure it's good to go. Now's the time, right?
About that interior...
Chris ended up with most of a Gizmobob interior. Here's his post from 2016:
Chris Paterson wrote: |
Also I guess it will be without a rear seat bottom cover and just bare springs. I gave my rear seat bottom cover to Gizmo Bob to send back to SMS because they made them too short and they were supposed to remake me one.
But that was at the VW Classic 2014, 2.5 years ago. |
6 years later and I'm in the same spot. We'll see how it goes. Bob, if you're reading this...
Anyway, here's what I got:
New front seat covers:
New lower panels:
Original upper panels:
Hoping I can clean those up.
Original upper door trim and armrests:
Hoping to source better armrests.
Here's the new rear seat upper and NOS lower that I sold many years ago because it had a bad stain on it. Funny how that worked out. Maybe it's a sign?
Well, it still has the stain and it looks worse. My backup plan is to have the NOS rear seat S&P material replaced with some new S&P material that I have (just enough for a rear seat...go figure).
Ultimately, I'm hoping I can get that replacement seat bottom.
In my opinion, it'd be kind of dumb to throw all this nice stuff and new interior at a "patina" car. I went down to ISP with the intention of keeping it pretty much as-is, and following through with what Chris was gonna do. But after giving it a once over, I knew I wouldn't be able to do just that. It's at ISP, waiting patiently.
Next, more about George and William. _________________ 1963 Notchback - Ruby Red

Okay, it has been a minute. Not a whole lot was going on, but over the last few months, a lot has been happening. Long story short...this thing was rusty. Lots more than we planned for. I was really hoping this project would lean more on the preservation side but that really went out the window with all the rust we found. Here are a few blurry pics...
Not good. And there was more...lots more. Work started...and kept going and going. We fixed the original hood. There was really no choice as we don't have another early hood to replace it. The hyper-extension really did a number on everything in that area. The hood hinges and bushings were replaced and the area around them fixed. The door jams and hinge areas were repaired. The early cars all crack there at the bottom hinge. The only early driver's side door we had as a replacement for the '66 door on it, was rough. All good now. The rockers were basically replaced...they were super rough. Underneath that beautiful uncracked dash was all bad. All good now.
Here are some progress pics and where we're at currently. Sorry, they are a little blurry.
Really moving along now... _________________ 1963 Notchback - Ruby Red

Agreed. I thought it was just going to get a tune up, but once you start shooting that much primer, you might as well go full on paint job. That's when things start getting expensive. Keep up with the updates, as it's nice to see an early Notch getting redone. Looks good though. Nice job. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Cool build. I look forward to it. For the record if I would have bought it, I would have tried to keep this thing as OEM as possible, kinda the route you're going with it. But... I definitely would lower it on earlies. Stock type 3 suspension of course.
Probably why people don't offer me cars like this. _________________ Jason

Well, Tram will tell you repairing rust and painting the car IS preservation. Leaving the "patina" isn't. From what I've seen, your rusty spots are normal for these cars. At least from what I've seen. Doesn't matter if it's an early or late Notch, a Fastback or Squareback, they ALL seem to rust in similar areas. Some worse than others. Nice job digging in a little deeper than you wanted, as it'll help keep it around longer. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

It is surprising how well that car looks to have hid the rust. I'm glad it is in good hands. I look forward to the interior pics as one of the previous owners of mine swapped out the original fabric for some hounds tooth material. Eventually I will get the correct material and return the interior back to stock. |

Yeah, agreed. I don't think anyone else had a reason to pull the fenders off or do much digging. This car spent a lot of time in Colorado and the PNW so it kinda makes sense. Here are some more rust pics...
Anyway...got some Ruby Red on her today.
