I dread to think how many fantastic original paint solid VWs were repainted in the 80s, 90s, and 00s.
I’ve done it. ‘61 Ruby Red Beetle. ‘59 Lowlight Cab. Others.
It’s still happening.
I include ‘older repaint’ cars that could easily have had the cheap respray carefully stripped to reveal the og paint - but got fully paint-stripped or sand-blasted back to bare metal. I did this to a sign-written ‘54 Standard Oval, and I also know it happened to a sign-written ‘54 Barndoor Deluxe.
Do you have any good examples to share?
A before and after picture would be the ultimate... _________________ -StockRocks-

originally was green, then blue, then orange, and now orange brown I actually have the body shop receipts for it too.
the rest of the interior is pretty much spotless as far as the green goes. minus the bottom 7 inches of the car
bondo blue
OG red
some random re-spray from the 80s or 90s
OG interior paint before i started to clean the dirt and grime off. Around the window seals, you can still see the original pearl white. no rust in that area that i can see. i plan on stripping back the paint on one of the panels and polishing the original stuff for fun once body work begins. _________________ -'85 c10 5.3 LS, 222 cam, long tubes, x pipe, 3 inch spin tech's

No, no, no. With all respect, you’re missing the point.
I’m talking about nice dry original cars...

This is the bus that prompted the thread. I saw it online today - it has been repainted very recently...maybe in 2020

I actually dont mind this at all, the end result in my opinion looks to be factory correct meticulous resto.
But this....

...I do have a problem with, as it was fairly original, other than being lowered has obviously been painted a completely different color, which in my opinion has made it a crappy resto custom, and ruined the originality of it.
I know most of you will probably think im nuts, with my two analogies but..... _________________ WANTED: Henry Veale Santa Rosa plate frames

Oh ok, I think I understand the thread now.
Wouldnt all cars that aren't still wearing its og paint be shoved into this category? I think I'm missing the point. _________________ -'85 c10 5.3 LS, 222 cam, long tubes, x pipe, 3 inch spin tech's

From this (old external repaint, original interior paint, original underbody paint):
To this (sandblasted inside - outside - underside):

Yes, after following the build, it was like an automotive bereavement.
So unique - and on a model like that. _________________ -StockRocks- |

cocaine is a hell of a drug. Seriously, this is a tragedy.
The patina on this bus WAS on point. Obviously, this person doesn't understand first paint and the appeal. _________________

I like this thread, I have had many OG paint VWs over the past 50 years. . Many of them were repainted and that was usually just before they were sold, it took me many years and many very nice OG paint cars to finally figure out why they lost their charm after a repaint. |

What a tragedy. That 15 would have looked so great with paint blended.
