The GKN/Lobro boot with the small step down is trash folks!
That step down separated from the larger pleats
22,000 miles but they broke sooner. 20,000 / 21,000 miles? They looked good at 15,000 miles.
On the other hand……..
My genuine VW boots are looking good.
I’ll be ordering another pair to replace these Lobro boots.

My box from FCP arrived last night!
Merry Christmas!
Inside were my Tiquan axle boots.
I ordered two of the genuine VW boot kit VAG-2Q0498202
And
Two of the GKN/Lobro boot kits GKN-304203
The VW boots cost significantly more.
I opened the boxes and the boot design is radically different!
The VW boot is one set of Bellows while the GKN has two distinct sizes as it approaches the axle shaft.
The GKN comes with new Hex head bolts, grease, gasket and wheel nut.
The VW kit just has the boot, gasket clamp and snap ring.
The texture varies remarkably!
The GKN is very stiff, so stiff you almost wonder how it will survive a life of spinning rapidly for years and years.
The VW is much softer, but still a fairly stiff feel.
Both boots are a plastic compound, not rubber like you expect and are used to Vanagon boots being.
I have a genuine VW axle boot and even in it's old age it is still way softer and more pliable than any one of these two new ones!
Here Grandpa sits between the "young-uns".
All three have the same bolt pattern and sit at the same height. !
The only markings on the GKN boot is a molded in time stamp.
I took photos of the markings on the VW boot........
And the label attached to it.....
I'm going to install one set on each axle and see how it goes.

put the VW boot, well the GKN for that matter, in the freezer for a few hours and give it the flex test! _________________ -dan

Anyway, I was under the Bus last week cleaning the grounds and starter cables and noticed the condition of the boots.
Here is the driver side. As viewed in this pic, the stock replacement that was sourced from Bus Depot (ordered in 2018 and stored until Jan 1, 2020) is on the transmission side, OEM VW Tiguan boot is at the wheel.
Stock replacement boot on this side is leaking grease out the axle side, causing a large mess. The rib doesn't appear to be cracking though.
The Tiguan boot looks perfect if dusty.
On the passenger side, the boots are both starting to crack right at the axle.
I do wish I had two Tiguan boots and could have done a whole axle for the experiment, but alas I didn't.
Actually, at this point, I kind of wish I had installed 4 Tiguan boots! It looks very clear at this point that the Tiguan boot is going to be the winner of this experiment.
Current mileage is 90015. So the boots all have nearly only 3 years of use and only 8000ish miles. Bus has been driven in all sorts of weather conditions in that time. |

My boot is still going strong several months later.
Only thing I've noticed is that the small end of the boot is a loose fit on the shaft. What are people doing to compensate for that? Just cranking down on a jubilee clip?
The original 1984 boot on the other side of the shaft has split, so I'll replace it with the tiguan boot as well, but might as well solve the loose shaft issue at the same time... |

I just used the clamp that came with the boot kit; wasn't loose after that. _________________ Dave Cook

That's good. Are their boots they are selling today the exact same boots as they sold you 7 yrs. ago? _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Repeatability is always a problem with CV boots. Seems most of the manufacturers don't stamp their names or logo on their boots so you have no idea what you might have actually bought the last time you needed boots. Even is you can get new boots from the same manufacturer there is just no guarantee that the compound and workmanship will be the same.
Maybe we could have a picture thread, where people post close up pictures of the boots that has lasted them at least 100k miles so we could pick up clues as to who manufactured said boots. |

It is curious how the clamp area (it had a clamp) didn't wear but simply broke off. |
Need some movement, and rubbing to cause wear.
There is no movement at the clamp, thus no rubbing.
But there are high stresses in the repeated bending that cause fatigue, and eventual fracture. _________________

Thought I would post an update. After 3ish years and roughly 20000 kms, my genuine VW Tiguan boots are holding up extremely well. My van is a lifted 2WD, sitting at about 18.25" from centre of hub to fender. At this ride height, it does not show to be overextended, and there are no signs of cracking or wear. The material feels like it did when new.
I believe it is important to note that these are genuine VW boots. The fact that they are Tiguan boots isn't really the point, but the fact that they are actually VW, modern and not a third party manufacturer. Getting GKN/Lobro/whatever brand doesn't really address the material issue, that getting factory original is a superior material. Yes, this is an assumption, but it seems to play out.
Also, as this is a successful install into a lifted 2WD, Can I ask the Mods to put the title back to its original state?
