Hey folks,
I'm rehabbing a westy with a Subaru motor in it, and the instrument cluster has been ... ravaged.

I'm a noob to the subi swap, and need to get this thing smogged. So while I'm rehabbing the wiring, I also need to implement the Check Engine light.

Does anyone have instructions for how to set up the CEL?

(my paperwork from Kennedy has nothing).

My questions:
* Does anyone make a replacement "christmas tree" in the dash that says "Check Engine" next to the light?
Like this:

* I'm assuming you can simply connect a PIN from the ECU to the light on the dash

Or do this instead?

Thanks!

BTW if anyone is looking for this, the Check Engine Light is referred to as "MIL" in the documentation, which stands for "Malfunction Indicator Light".

For the Subaru side, look for pin D19 on the Subaru ECU. It is likely located under the rear seat. Something like this:

You will find lots of good information about this here:

So according to this:

The MIL (CEL) should be located at Plug F47, pin 19

In theory, this wire should show up at the Vanagon Engine wiring box (especially since it's been registered in California where CELs are required).

Is this it?

that looks more like Yellow w/red stripe to me. Plus the wire size is larger.

Man I'm stumped for now.

I think you are on the right track! The Red/Yellow D19 wire at the Subaru ECU looks correct to me. You should double check this for your specific Subaru model year. If you previously had a CEL wired through the engine wiring box, that Subaru Red/Yellow wire will be spliced onto one of the wires from that 7-pin round VW connector. You will have to trace the wires between the connector and the Subaru ECU to verify which VW wire is spliced onto D19.

For my 92 Legacy:

Shows F47 D19 Red/Yellow.

Who wants me to cut this wire?

(and then follow these instructions)
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=597883

Anyone? Anyone?

I tried to find where the other end went, but it's not exposed in the engine bay wiring box. I hate cutting wires. Unlike the PO!

If you think it was already wired for the conversion, try checking continuity to one of the wires in the 7-pin VW connector. Then move towards the front of the van with a continuity check.

Once this is hooked up, how do you test that the CEL is functioning properly?

I found this internet thread:
https://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/48690-getting-codes-from-ej22/

Which leads to this:
https://www.surrealmirage.com/subaru/engine.html

Which says:
Car off: Connect the single-wire, black connectors together.
Key to ON: count the flashes.

Here's what I'm getting:

Link

So according to the site referenced above:
4. At this point the check engine light should start to flash the all clear signal (steady 1/2 second interval flashes). At this point the ECU's memory is cleared. If the check engine light does not flash, or indicates some other sequence, there is a fault present in the system, and should be checked for necessary repairs.

This looks like the "all clear" to me.

You guys agree?

I received the smallcar insert and got the light wired up (just for testing).
And here it is! Almost ready for that smog test!

Took it in for smog testing, and .... They are sending me to the BAR Referee!

The good news is once I pass I'll NEVER have to "find that secret smog shop" ever again. It will be fully legal.

Out of the frying pan, into the fire.

Best of luck, you may need it.
