I recently sold a VW transmission to a guy out of a '73 Super Beetle, to go into his '74 Super. He drove 2+ hours. He bought the transmission, took it home and then he took his transmission out and then told me that it's not the same and not interchangeable. I explained to him, that '73 and '74 used the same transmission, unless it was an automatic.

He's been a major pain in the neck...truthfully. I told him to just bring it back and I will give him his money back, but it's one thing after another and he is determined that this is a different transmission, He sent me this photo today... and told me it's not interchangeable and that I sold him a different transmission. I don't know how to respond... any help would be appreciated! Here is the photo he sent me... telling me, it's not the same and not going to work... Rolling Eyes

Yes a '73 and a '74 both used the exact same single side cover transaxle with the "AT" code. The problem is that somebody before him installed an earlier double side cover transaxle in his car. The transaxle in the picture is out of a '69 and uses a different clutch & pressure plate then his '74.

He needs to get the correct clutch, P/P and T/O bearing to install the '73 transaxle you sold him for his car.

Thank you, I will advise him. He has just constantly been on my nerves... he bought a few other parts off me I sold him cheap..in person and when he got home, he complained, so this was just a last straw. I told him to just bring me my transmission back for a refund, but he told me he wasn't going to drive 2+ hours one way, and I should meet him halfway. It's been a rollercoaster. Your help is gratefully appreciated.

Dave is right. He has an early trans in his car. Tell the dumb dumb to check the code on it. You sold him the correct one. I put an early one In a late car before too because that's what I could find. I had to change the nose cone, and all the clutch parts to match.

He just needs the '74 stuff. Tell him the go to his flaps and get the clutch parts for his year. They will match the trans you sold him.

I don't see that it is your problem to solve his issues. You did sell him the correct transaxle for his car. If you feel kind enough to refund his money I would not meet him 1/2 way, and tell him he is responsible to fix his own mistake.

Maybe show him these threads to help him get what he needs.

Which one is the one you sold him?

If you sold him the one on the right, and what's on the left is his original one, your car had the wrong trans (from a 69).
If vice-versa, his car had the wrong trans.
