I got a muffler for my Espar from Espar. I’m sure it could be adapted. I don’t mind the noise, but neighbors might not enjoy it. Even with the muffler, I try to park so that the sound is pointed away if possible.

Yeah the Espar ones are pricy. $50+ Did it really muffle well?
Currently the noise is not really noticeable inside the bus. I am trying to be neighborly.

I put one of the cheap Amazon mufflers on my Espar. Seems to work as good as expected. It is basically two pieces of stainless welded together with a spring inside to act as a diffuser. Can't hear it inside at all.

It's amazing how quiet it can be in the middle of the night at a campsite. I'm sure you can still hear the espar when it kicks on even with the muffler, but have not had one person or ranger call me out for making noise after quiet hour. So it must be just enough reduction in noise.

you can get the knockoff webasto mufflers on ebay for peanuts to at least try it out. i dont think its worth reinventing the wheel here..
follow the install guide for the muffler distance and pipe routing. pointing the outlet to the ground really helps as well.

im happy with the webasto non knockoff muffler on our setup. its quiet and a bit thicker wall and more durable looking than the ebay unit i had at one point. though im sure internally its the same, so it may be worth trying an ebay one first.

yeah, I've camped next to tenters who snored WAY WAY louder than the CDH or Espar will be.
just grab one of the CDH mufflers and it'll be fine.
you can put a turn down on it also so the sounds not shooting out the end too.
don't worry so much though, the other tenters will accidentally set off their car alarms in the middle of the night or open/slam every door trying to find the wet wipes their wife sent them out after. |

I've recently seen some CDH setups with two mufflers...Does that really make a difference?

I try not to use the heater in a crowded campground, especially with tent campers nearby, but it's not that loud, and the sound is just a gentle roar, more white noise than anything obnoxious.
(my D2 has the espar muffler and that webasto intake silencer) |

check out the install manual i linked
install the muffler as close to the unit as possible
point exhaust tip down
page 60 makes mention of the maximum length of piping w/ and w/o the muffler. the piping length drops significantly when theres a muffler. two in series may create a lot more backpressure.
try installing an intake silencer as well

Normally we don't use campgrounds, but we were several sites away from a Sprinter that had a noisy diesel heater.
The sound went right thru our Westy canvas.
At the time it seemed very loud.
I have no idea if it was muffleaand it was several sites away, affecting lots of sites, all night nlong.
I was sure glad it wasn't closer, or a travelling partner.
It depends how quiet the night is.
On a windy night, or near a highway we probably wouldn't notice it.
But when you get that 'real quiet campsite' the sound of indoor comfort can be the most significant sound.
Much louder than an extra blanket.

Per this video, a muffler makes a fairly significant difference, it takes off the 'fan whistle', which is important.
This guy addresses the issue of exhaust bends / restrictions and double mufflers too.
Propex isn't silent either, but I think it's much quieter.
I'd like to hear a muffled diesel heater parked next to a Propex.

like you said, context in the surrounding environment matters alot there too.
when there are other outside sounds.
the diesel heaters have a varied noise level.. we mostly run ours on the low-constant setting and it's darn quiet, constant low noise. but if you are in freezing temps then it'll run at a greater fan speed and make more noise.
I have a propex & CDH here in the driveway. I'll see just how much louder one is than the other.. my propex isn't muffled. hmm don't think my brothers CDH is either. I'm not likely to run a video and post it as well I'm not that savvy. |

I have the webasto muffler on my webasto, and a very short exhaust routing (probably 18'' total, including muffler) and I genuinely can't hear the exhaust inside the car, but yes- it does produce "Some" noise outside the car.
I have asked people I camped next to multiple times, and none of them noticed/had a problem with it.
I also have the webasto air intake muffler, not sure which makes more difference.
The fuel pump is the loudest piece of the situation, and I've got that aggressively quieter using the 90* hoses webasto sells as a solution to this, as well as mounting it on rubber hangers. Now a days, all I hear is a subtle click and the sound of the interior fan.

Spoken like a westerner.  It’s a little more dense from The Mississippi east. Traveling, your bound to end up in a improved camp area. It’s unavoidable if your trying to cover distance every day.

Guilty as charged!
My Espar heater noise can't compare to yappy dogs and generators at campsites. If we end up at a campsite that is noisy, we just drink a bit more to drown out the noise
