I've owned 2 beetle in my life and seen many others. Not once have I seen a beetle with the cooling thermostat. If in place, it should while closed increase airflow, you would think through the heater and defrost system?

If you're talking about the 1965+ flap-style thermostat setup, then yes, airflow through the heater boxes will likely be increased to some extent while the thermostat flaps are closed. The earlier throttle ring thermostat reduces the amount of air permitted into the fan while cold.

I will say one thing, the air will be a lot warmer/hotter. You will get more air flow when the the flaps are closed.

I've found reinstalling the thermostat and flaps makes a substantial difference in the heated air getting hot faster.

The other key factor is ensuring you're running the VW heater boxes, not the aftermarket ones that are about 1/4 as effective.

I added a correct thermostat to mine about a year ago, and it starts and runs so much better now! Definitely worth it!

With an operational thermostat, before the flaps open, the air flow for the heat will be more, as some air will not be flowing over the cylinders, so has to move through the shroud hoses. And the cylinders and heater boxes will warm up faster.

Once the thermostat opens fully, the volume of air will decrease some as some of the air will now go over the cylinders.
