Hey All,
I'm installing later style stock A/C in my 86 van. I'm starting by hanging the evaporator from the upper bed board. It looks like I need four holes and four metric T-nuts.
I have an older upper bed board that I was hoping to use as a template. I learned today that the older evaporators are wider so the holes don't line up.
I'm hoping that someone can get some measurements for me so I know where to drill.
This is my new upper bed board.
and this is what I'm trying to fit.
Thanks,

I'm in the process of remounting my evaporator as well. I hate the way it hangs down and obscures the view back through the rear window. I had a plastic mounting housing failure and the entire thing came crashing down. I want to figure out how to make the intrusion on the sight lines less obtrusive. One of the first things I discovered is the evaporator unit is mounted at an angle so the air flow is presented with a taller window than just through the unit lying flat as you show it on the Dynamat. You also have it upside down, but don't know it that makes any difference unless it would make the hoses too short. There is a lot of stuff going on with the whole evap zone. Blowers with speed resistors which suck the air through and electrics including a thermocouple. And most important, the condensate tray and drains.
You will need all this to have a working AC. I plan to mock up a new sleeker housing on the work bench from a combo of the old plastic and some 1/4" ply to figure out how to get it all to happen. Then I will rework the plastic housing with epoxy and glass cloth to build the final version.
In my worthless opinion, you are a long way from drilling any holes.
Good luck and keep us all posted so we can benefit from your installation.

I’m pretty sure that the evaporator pictured above is showing the “top”. I could take a side measurement from the left cabinet to the lower rear cabinet support bolt and you could work from that. What I don’t see are the metal brackets that are sandwiched between the evaporator and the ceiling. Those retain the cross cabinet and the intake grid. You’ll need those to mimic the measurement I take. _________________ ☮️ |

I have more parts than I was showing.
This is the evaporator intake screen with a small bit of cabinet.
These are the brackets that sandwich between the evaporator and the bed.
Drip tray and fan assembly
I have the wire harness as well. This van came with factory air as a tintop. It's a poptop now.
I have no cabinets right now. Measurements from cabinets won't help me. The van will be getting a custom interior from Rhino Designs. I'm trying to get all the mechanical stuff complete before that happens.
I think the easiest way to get the placement of these four evaporator bolts would be from above. Pop the top, pull the rear mattress, and take a measurement from the front of the rear bed board to the center of the two front T-nuts. Then get a measurement from right side to the center of the front-right T-nut.

This is wrongly assembled. The 2 brackets goe on the inside of that panel and all you see is the screw head from the rear. So, I would attach both brackets to that panel and put the panel up into position and mark two holes to the ceiling panel. Then hold the evaporator on the two holes and mark the other two.
Otherwise, you'll need someone to pop their top and remove the rear mattress and make those measurements for you, which is not an easy ask. Plus, the person making the measurements would need to be on the same page as you. _________________ ☮️ |

Mark,
These are not assembled at all. They're just sitting there for the photo. The screws are threaded in only so they don't get lost. Please trust that I know how this is assembled.
I could use that panel for a rough left right position. It won't help with the for and aft position.
Thanks for the response.

I could get you a for and aft measurement from below. It would be in a day or so. We are in the middle of a tropical storm. Say with the hatch closed from the glass to the lower rear screws? I had mine completely out while I renovated it. The side cabinet went in before the evaporator but after the hoses. It all only fit one way. I also notched the lower housing where the drain tubes route through it so I could attach the drain tubes and fit the drain tray prior to installing the lower section. _________________ ☮️ |

Thanks for the photos. Those are for the earlier version and the mounts are different. I actually have an old bed board that is drilled for those mounts. The mounts are much wider on the early style.
I've downloaded about 70 detailed photos of the rear A/C system. This is the best I've seen so far. I added the speech bubbles.
I think I can get pretty close with the photos I have. I was hoping for a little better accuracy. I'm also considering renting a camper van with A/C and taking the measurements myself. _________________ Patrick Brown

I'm pretty sure that this protrusion is the centerline of the van.
The measurement from the left side of the rear panel to the van center would be helpful. I think I can guesstimate the rest.
It looks like I should try to mount this as far to the rear as possible and still be able to insert the rear panel. I'll leave a bit of wiggle room.

My ceiling is bare with the mounting points showing. I'll take a picture and measurements for you tonight. |

The rear wardrobe cabinet size is set by the rear seat/bed. It will be stock size. _________________ Patrick Brown

I created an interior support thing to hold the evap since I wanted to rebuild the cabinet so it is independent of the evaporator. I'll add some pics shortly. You may be able to do something like that to support all the pieces. _________________ 83.5 Westy with Subaru 2.5, 4 spd manual, center seat, COLD A/C on 134a!, Winter camp heated with an Espar B4 gasoline furnace
