The ignition switch isn't original anyway, because I remember you changed it.
Get one of these, and worry about the doors later.

It does look like that white paint is flaking off, and you can see the SWR on the outside of the emblem, under the same flaking white paint.
I will have to pull the emblem off to see, and since it's missing a couple of clips anyway, it's probably a good idea. |

Found my OG door panels and was comparing them to some panels my buddy Al bought years ago.
Trying to decide if I can get these pockets installed on them or if I should just splurge on a new Clara set. _________________ 1959 Single Cab “Otto”

Hello- I installed my OG pockets on Clara's panels with pretty good success. Two things to note...
1- The color was harder to match than I thought it would be
2- The OG holes for the rivets are usually too rough to reuse. I moved the rivet holes slightly and redrilled for a fresh start.

Thanks, those look great! What do you think of the quality of Clara's panels? _________________ 1959 Single Cab “Otto”

Well, I got my windows out yesterday. The rear Philips screws gave me some trouble, but a thorough whacking with an impact screwdriver persuaded them to come out. Several missing bolts on one side that I'll have to replace. Couldn't figure out how to get the windows out after removing those visible bolts and after much struggling, decided to consult my Bentley and found out about the two hidden bolts inside the door. Once I got those off, removal was achievable.
Just noticed the insulation in this Bentley photo. Did the old buses have insulation in the doors?
Now on to the fun jobs of disassembling the frame and replacing all that destroyed rubber. _________________ 1959 Single Cab “Otto”

Got the windows disassembled completely, almost.
Trying to figure out how to get this rock solid door molding out, any ideas?
Looks like there are stops in these grooves, hopefully they're in the WW kit I got...

Arggg, been there with seals like that. Fresh razor blade to slice on them while being careful not to cut yourself and basically chiseling them out with little screwdrivers. If you can slice on them a little, it will often release some pressure against the channel and you can slide little pieces out. It's a PITA. _________________ How to Post Photos

That and heat. I just did this job and it wasn't too bad. Also, take some sandpaper (I used some 1000 grit) in the channels. The ends of that channel are slightly bent in, which you can bend out while putting in the seal. After it's in, bend the ends back down on the seal. _________________ 1973 Standard Beetle - running maintenance thread - https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=675712&highlight=

Well, the first window took about 2 hours, the second, less than an hour, so I guess I got some mad skills going by the end.
Heat and a utility knife to slice along the side of each track. pick out the middle slice and dig out the two edge slices. Hopefully there will be enough structural integrity to pull them gently out without breaking.

Super glad I got these manuals, they’re saving me from doing stupid things.
Like ruining my window frames…
Or continuing a quixotic search for pick up bumpers…

Well, this went better than I thought. I'm not a good driller, so I messed up my vent frames a little more than I wanted. I made a little anvil that fit inside my vent wing latches and hammered those rivets home. They're tight now, and I bet when I get those vent wing rubbers in, it's gonna be fine.
WW supplies aluminum rivets, I hope they hold up as well as the steel originals.
Did I mention I'm not much of a mechanic? I'm learning a lot. And hammering these down made me very happy.
I even got them on the correct sides.

I've had problems with those repro vent wing latches.
Two issues:
1: The repros are pretty weak, and will snap off without much provocation.
2: All the new vent wing seals are WAY too thick. They cause the glass to have to press too tight to get the latches closed, making the first issue a real threat to breakage.
I end up having to do the two handed vent wing squeeze when opening and closing the vents. One hand pinches the glass against the frame to overcome the oversized seal, and the other hand opens or closes the latch.
It really sucks. Only when you see how easy the latch opens and closes with a good original setup can you appreciate the difference.
If anyone has a good lead on better repro seals I'd love to hear about it. _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

I took a tip from another Samba member and instead of using those "too-thick" vent window flat rubber seals, I used the "U" channel shaped Safari windshield rubber from WW. Thinner but not too thin. A nice fit! In the build thread on my '59 Double-Cab ( https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0 ) I did a pretty thorough how-to on vent and cab window rebuilding showing tools and products used including the Safari windshield rubber for the vent window seal that might be helpful to you...
It starts with some info on page 30 of the thread about 2/3 of the way down the page: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...;start=580
The how-to really gets going on page 35 of the thread:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...;start=680
The Safari seals were MUCH easier to use in substitution for the 'too-thick" crap they sell in the past and now, and it REALLY helps to make and use metal of wooden press with clamps to crush the glass into the frames without bending the frame ends outward!
Good luck and have fun!
