Man. I'm excited for you. This is going to be fun. You're starting from a much better position than I did by the looks of it.
Still has the fender spats. I've gone back and forth about getting real OEM mud flaps since the spats don't really seem to do anything, but I love the way they look. _________________ Joe T.

I removed everything and started looking for a way to bend the bars straight again. I do not have a press and other than getting brutal with a sledge I was at a loss until I looked at the lift. Hmmm. 2 tons of bus and the weight of the lift arms seems like a good press alternative maybe. I supported the bar on some blocks of wood and positioned it so the lift arm at the post was going to do all the pressing.
If you look carefully you can see the bend and the 'press' arrangement.
I dropped the lift down and the bar bent straight like it was a stick of butter. Problem solved.

First I gasped at the money shot pic...
Then I said to myself "and I thought I had a problem..."

Excellent use of the lift to straighten the driveshaft protector. It needs a good powerwash, but that is a good looking Syncro! _________________ '87 Syncro

Afraid your wife may open a page on Samba? I like the guys that say "That when they die they are afraid their wives will sell their toys for what they say they paid for them"

Wow you joined the club.
You're nuts.
But you will have a big smile (like a crazy person).
I attached a 'flex limiter' the the bar.
Tested first with a 1.5" block of wood taped on.
I liked it so made it of steel.
It touches the body crossmember if the bar flexes 5mm.
Protecting the driveshaft is important.
130,000 is a nice young Syncro. How did you conclude that mileage?
Drilling/greasing the OEM u-joints while they're still good, (without disturbing the balance etc) could be a good idea.
And replacing the 3rd/4th hub and bearings too is a good plan.
Same as a timing belt interval, it's been a known issue for something like 20 years now. The hub probably has cracks now.
There is no need to destroy other precious OEM parts just before rebuild (as per the Vanagon custom....).
Another Syncro gearbox bearing went "NLA" recently, so you have to re-use the old one.
So keeping it all in good condition in there is getting more important. _________________

Taking advantage of some cool dry days to finish the NAHT with Awl Grip 2000. The high tops are a gel coat and oxidize after a while. The Awl Grip is a catalyzed coating that is very durable.
I have two NAHTs. The second will go on my home based westy 3NTROPY next year too. Better to coat them together to save labor.
.
And this is why I have old shoes…

Dave I can’t explain how awesome that ProBikes sticker is. It represents an era (~ 20 years ago)of the Asheville mountain biking scene that is well like I said, inexplicable.
There’s a long shot I can ask around and find out some van history for you. I’d also pay shipping if you’d cut the metal out and send the sticker/metal to me and I’ll glue it onto my van, pm if either is of interest.
Edit: I’m assuming you’re replacing that bumper. _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL 2.1 AT Westfauxlia. "Frankie" Totaled https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=764510&highlight=carnage

Mike, Glad to send the sticker to you but as far as I know this bus was never in that area. I’d love it if you can find any history though. 😀 _________________ Dave O
