A) Examine the plastic pipes but I'm not so much in the "must replace them now!" Camp.
EDIT: I will be installing stainless pipes, I will be needing the peace of mind they will provide.
B) thermostat housing and thermostat, I sent my aluminum one off to Kam months ago! Heavy sigh......  hope she is enjoying it!
C) coolant distribution tower, will get the stainless stick shift version because I am eliminating the coolant based transmission cooler.
D) all radiator and heater hoses
E) Ford heater valve, I'll pass on Terry's in line valve right now, see if it is needed or not.

F) Radiator? Last time I simply replaced mine just because! But upon taking off the end tanks, it was debris free! I will look and test. Evaluate the Fin condition and tank integrity before just replacing it this time.
G) coolant sensors? Yeah...... why not? Keep the old ones as spares. If I go with the aluminum thermostat housing, I'll need the Syncro style senders anyway.
H) Water Pump
I) plastic nipple on right head? Some already have the metal one.
J) metal pressure tank, I just don't trust those old plastic ones with the crappy plastic cap!

13) fuel pump. Keep one as a spare. Just too important not to have onboard! I had my new (2000 miles) Bosch "genuine old style" die on route 20 in Idaho!
HAVE AN OLD ONE PLUS THE ONE IN THE VAN, TEST BOTH, CARRY ONE AS A SPARE.
14) fuel tank? I'll drop it, pull the sender and peer inside. The one I replaced on my 86 wasn't in bad shape at all after I cut it open! I'll do the stock saddle tank top plastic vent system this time. My metal ones worked great but was way over kill. New rollover valves in the expansion tanks too!
I will install the fuel burp fix valve if this unit doesn't already have the newer ball in a cage factory valve.

Vapor recovery tank? I have a new one I never installed on my 86. I just eliminated it, cut the hose and shoved it in the frame and became a gross polluter! But compared to fuel fill burp pollution? This was small potatoes!
Clogged venting causes fuel tank collapse.
15) Windows..... clean, lubricate the window lifts (might be electric?.. EDIT: they are manual Yay!! ) replace channel and scrapers as needed (EDIT: scrapers are new) Tighten the vent window pivots.

I've never done the newer design system but will do basically the same as I did to my 86. We need an 87 and up A/C repair tutorial anyway! Besides, I've got two owners with newer systems clamoring for ice cold working systems next Spring!

20 axle shafts. The unit is coming to me with just one axle! (Left side) Happily under my tool box is an OG automatic axle shaft with OG joints on it! I only hope that it is the axle length that I need! (Automatics take two different lengths)
Obviously disassemble, clean and repack the CV's. Then the great boot decision is to be made! I'm intrigued by the recently tried Tiquan VW OEM boot....

22) Seats? I've not spent time in the newer seats of the adjustable arm rest design but I KNOW I wasn't a fan of the 86 seats!
I also know that I LOVED my T&C Stow N Go seats! It was 5000 miles or more before we tired of sitting in them everyday! With The 86 seats it only took about three hours daily before I wanted out of that seat!
I still have mine from the 86 with the tracks for the Vanagon in my basement! A ten minute install. Mine are beige, the 90 interior is gray....... hmmmm....... anyone have gray or black seats but want beige? ....... let's trade!
Who is it that makes the Automotive dyes? SEM ? I've heard a LOT of good about their dyes but not sure about using it on a velour fabric seat? Anyone have experience dying fabrics?

I already own it and it is paid for! Totally worth trying before installing a house system!

My multi use solution doesn't hold a candle to the creativity of DuncanS's solution! Mine is so basic I almost hesitate to post it, but decades ago I used my bay window Westys as my service vehicle for my rental apartment business. I put the back seat down, and built a removable plywood liner for the whole back end, up to the windows. Iirc, I used loose pin hinges as my joints, so if I wanted to go camping, I took out the tools, pulled the hinge pins, and took out the plywood liner in pieces. Since they were all flat pieces, it took up almost no space in the garage, and my Westy interior was unscathed.
But Dave, I am confused. You have an F-150, a small utility trailer, and you still used your Prius as a work truck? But congrats on getting another Vanagon.

i had to chase some weirdo away from the tin top, then i realized it was Dave. i think he really misses sitting on the side of the road with a puzzled look on his face while staring at a lifeless engine. the Prius does not provide that experience

Actually I do......... but I think they are entranced with the romance of the idea, they the type of people who could NOT handle the real "personality" of a Vanagon. Well, she could..... her husband? He would be an emotional train wreck every time something stupid happened like a wheel falling off or something.
I really like the boy but the silver spoon he was born with has tarnished his expectations of life. 🤷♂️
Then again, he could afford to fly me out to wherever he broke down as his personal mechanic...... now THAT has a level of appeal........

I love your to do list and in covid time, we need projects to keep our juices flowing.
Glad you want DRL's. Given that we are the first at the scene of an accident, I want people to know I'm there. I relayed my inner square high beams so as long as the headlight switch is off, they come on in series. When the headlight switch is activated, they return to their normal function. Put in a switch so I could turn them off, but never do. They are plenty bright enough and no extra lights need to be mounted. Took a bit of figuring and wiring, but worth the effort. No where near as complicated as your fresh air mod which was super impressive.

Now this high beam as DRL's idea borders on genius!
Driving out in the Prairies and High Deserts really show how important DRL's really are. Distant Vehicles literally vanish in the "mirages" on the highways.
Once I put in the 6052 ecode assemblies, that wimpy VW high beam becomes rather unimportant. I'm not sure you even need them as working headlights.
Just take them out of service as headlights. Relay them to go off with headlights on!
Jeez....... another task to do!
