Seeing as to how this is Vanagon round #2 I'm making a "must do" list.
Getting the engine running is a given.
Rod bolt article ……..

Air bound lifters
https://www.vanagononline.com/articles/hydraulic-lifters-untold-story/
On my 86 I did a lot of things that while they were nice, I'm simply not going to bother with on this one, unless time proves that I miss the modification.
Must do.........
1) e Code Hella headlight assemblies mounted in Ford headlamp buckets. These were such a major upgrade, not only in improved visibility but also superior mounting and adjustment design. 9054

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001G72VIK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
1a) headlamp relays

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0
Headlight ceramic harness , jay brown
https://sites.google.com/site/vanagonheadlightrelays/headlight-wiring-harnesses
2) MOUSE PROOF! Rinse and repeat, I KNOW the entrances and considering where my Pa house is located next to the farmers fields, mice are DEFINITELY a concern! And as I've said...... I hates mices!
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0
3) fuel lines of course. Also eliminate that plastic bulkhead fitting.
SAE30r9 ethanol rated 5/16” 20’
20 5/16” fuel line clamps
3/16" ethanol rated but not injection rated vent hose
A Fuel tank to fuel pump fuel line
Build "Waldo" style injector manifolds, alternate fuel line routing ......
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=9545521#9545521
4) "Solid State" auto trans cooler. Stupid simple design, no running of hoses or cooling fans needed.
http://www.foreignautosupply.com/media/fas.pptx
http://www.foreignautosupply.com/parts-accessories/1-automatic-transmission-heat-sink/#.X8t3YrJOmhA
5) coolant system.
A) Examine the plastic pipes but I'm not so much in the "must replace them now!" Camp.
EDIT: I will be installing stainless pipes, I will be needing the peace of mind they will provide.
B) thermostat housing and thermostat, I sent my aluminum one off to Kam months ago! Heavy sigh...... hope she is enjoying it!
C) coolant distribution tower, will get the stainless stick shift version because I am eliminating the coolant based transmission cooler.
D) all radiator and heater hoses
E) Ford heater valve, I'll pass on Terry's in line valve right now, see if it is needed or not.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6335569#6335569
F) Radiator? Last time I simply replaced mine just because! But upon taking off the end tanks, it was debris free! I will look and test. Evaluate the Fin condition and tank integrity before just replacing it this time.
G) coolant sensors? Yeah...... why not? Keep the old ones as spares. If I go with the aluminum thermostat housing, I'll need the Syncro style senders anyway.
H) Water Pump
I) plastic nipple on right head? Some already have the metal one.
J) metal pressure tank, I just don't trust those old plastic ones with the crappy plastic cap!
K) clamps BelMetric https://belmetric.com/ or McMaster Carr https://www.mcmaster.com/metric-bolts/ .. ABA or NORMA
5) power steering hoses. You know what? I lost my power steering belt outside of Crater Lake in Oregon on my 86 heading East. I thought, "I have a spare belt, but why did it pop off?" I counted myself lucky that only that belt came off without taking the water pump belt with it. I left it off for the next 3000 miles and didn't miss it! I may just wait and see.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=383712
6) Power steering idle boost wires..... INSULATE THEM !
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=692179
7) inline fuse for the fuel injection system. In the little black box LF engine compartment. The "Glow when they Blow" design.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...p;start=20
8 ) oil pressure sender units (2)
9) oil pressure gauge. I really like the Glow Shift oil filter adapter that VanAgain offers. Maybe an oil temperature gauge? I like the ashtray gauge pod system I had.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=745569&highlight=

Gauge Pod for ashtray, I like the power port feature. Put an oil pressure gauge in the other side.
https://www.etsy.com/listing/580038640/vanagon-ash...=785411252
10) HAVE New engine oil cooler with genuine VW O'ring.
11) high mount 3rd brake light
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=535840k
https://www.gowesty.com/product/-/23669/third-brake-light-kit-led-?v=
12) front DRLs, being seen is just too important to not have them.
I will figure out the "how to" and then reWire the inner high beams as DRL's per Duncan's genius idea!
13) fuel pump. Keep one as a spare. Just too important not to have onboard! I had my new (2000 miles) Bosch "genuine old style" die on route 20 in Idaho!
HAVE AN OLD ONE PLUS THE ONE IN THE VAN, TEST BOTH, CARRY ONE AS A SPARE.
14) fuel tank? I'll drop it, pull the sender and peer inside. The one I replaced on my 86 wasn't in bad shape at all after I cut it open! I'll do the stock saddle tank top plastic vent system this time. My metal ones worked great but was way over kill. New rollover valves in the expansion tanks too!
I will install the fuel burp fix valve if this unit doesn't already have the newer ball in a cage factory valve.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0
Vapor recovery tank? I have a new one I never installed on my 86. I just eliminated it, cut the hose and shoved it in the frame and became a gross polluter! But compared to fuel fill burp pollution? This was small potatoes!
Clogged venting causes fuel tank collapse.
15) Windows..... clean, lubricate the window lifts (might be electric?.. EDIT: they are manual Yay!! ) replace channel and scrapers as needed (EDIT: scrapers are new) Tighten the vent window pivots.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=649253
16) sliding door channel clean up and roller replacement. I think I've still got enough new parts to do another one on hand!
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...highlight=
17) tighten exterior mirrors. I won't be doing the Jeep CJ mirrors again, these may even be electric? (EDIT : Yes! they are electric)
18 ) A/C ...... MUST FIX THE AIR CONDITIONING! One cannot tolerate the NorthEast Summers without A/C!
I've never done the newer design system but will do basically the same as I did to my 86. We need an 87 and up A/C repair tutorial anyway! Besides, I've got two owners with newer systems clamoring for ice cold working systems next Spring!

19) wheel bearing repack/replace as needed. Might drill the rear hubs for a grease fitting.
Install Mercedes Style front axle nuts.......
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=8981594&highlight=#8981594
20 axle shafts. The unit is coming to me with just one axle! (Left side) Happily under my tool box is an OG automatic axle shaft with OG joints on it! I only hope that it is the axle length that I need! (Automatics take two different lengths)
Obviously disassemble, clean and repack the CV's. Then the great boot decision is to be made! I'm intrigued by the recently tried Tiquan VW OEM boot....
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=745007&highlight=axle+boot
VW PN 1k0498201
21) Heater box clean and reseal.
Lube the blower fan and install the Jeep resistor.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=623382
I may not be doing my fresh air / recirculate design. It worked amazingly well but it was a LOT of work and now that 10c has his system, it may not worth doing again. But then again......... while it was a time sink it was very cheap $$ when compared to 10c price for his kit. Mine was a cleaner install too.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=605822&highlight=
22) Seats? I've not spent time in the newer seats of the adjustable arm rest design but I KNOW I wasn't a fan of the 86 seats!
I also know that I LOVED my T&C Stow N Go seats! It was 5000 miles or more before we tired of sitting in them everyday! With The 86 seats it only took about three hours daily before I wanted out of that seat!
I still have mine from the 86 with the tracks for the Vanagon in my basement! A ten minute install. Mine are beige, the 90 interior is gray....... hmmmm....... anyone have gray or black seats but want beige? ....... let's trade!
Who is it that makes the Automotive dyes? SEM ? I've heard a LOT of good about their dyes but not sure about using it on a velour fabric seat? Anyone have experience dying fabrics?
23) GoWesty Alternator Mount reinforcement
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=571070
24) rebuild alternator with high quality bearings like my 86.
25) alternator to starter harness, now I can make my own, I have the large terminal crimper.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=732378
26) clean body ground trees, replace heat damaged terminals.
Clean the ground wire above the fuel tank while it is out.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=548492
27) fuel Pressure Regulator
28 ) Trailer Hitch Burley Motorsport
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=439045
29) insulate front floor and Auto Shifter lever assembly to cure hot foot problems
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=237271
30) new front seat belts, why? The latches are easier and seat belts get old, fabric fatigues and should be replaced.
https://www.seatbeltplanet.com/c-1389189-seat-belts-shop-by-seat-belt-type.html
31) clean / rebuild hydraulic lifters
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=331065&postorder=desc
32) ignition switch

I'll add as I think of things, this is my basic "to do" list. Feel free to makes suggestions about items overlooked.
*****************************************************
*****************************************************
And then there is the "I WANT IT " list....
1) ARB awning
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=555872
2) house battery system, though I have a portable battery jumper pack. It will recharge using 12v connection. We don't boondock camp for long periods. I mainly want the house system to power my Truckfridge chest refrigerator. The jumper pack is probably more than adequate for overnight and maybe a full day here and there. On the plus side? I already own it and it is paid for! Totally worth trying before installing a house system!
3) outside shore power plug and related interior wiring.
4) GPS tracker sadly being a tintop I'll need to modify my sender location!
I am using the Van Tracker with doir open notification.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=757452
5) antitheft vehicle disable system
6)

My multi use solution doesn't hold a candle to the creativity of DuncanS's solution! Mine is so basic I almost hesitate to post it, but decades ago I used my bay window Westys as my service vehicle for my rental apartment business. I put the back seat down, and built a removable plywood liner for the whole back end, up to the windows. Iirc, I used loose pin hinges as my joints, so if I wanted to go camping, I took out the tools, pulled the hinge pins, and took out the plywood liner in pieces. Since they were all flat pieces, it took up almost no space in the garage, and my Westy interior was unscathed.
But Dave, I am confused. You have an F-150, a small utility trailer, and you still used your Prius as a work truck? But congrats on getting another Vanagon. _________________ 1969 Deluxe, owned since 1973

i had to chase some weirdo away from the tin top, then i realized it was Dave. i think he really misses sitting on the side of the road with a puzzled look on his face while staring at a lifeless engine. the Prius does not provide that experience _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL Camper

Actually I do......... but I think they are entranced with the romance of the idea, they the type of people who could NOT handle the real "personality" of a Vanagon. Well, she could..... her husband? He would be an emotional train wreck every time something stupid happened like a wheel falling off or something.
I really like the boy but the silver spoon he was born with has tarnished his expectations of life. 🤷♂️
Then again, he could afford to fly me out to wherever he broke down as his personal mechanic...... now THAT has a level of appeal........

I love your to do list and in covid time, we need projects to keep our juices flowing.
Glad you want DRL's. Given that we are the first at the scene of an accident, I want people to know I'm there. I relayed my inner square high beams so as long as the headlight switch is off, they come on in series. When the headlight switch is activated, they return to their normal function. Put in a switch so I could turn them off, but never do. They are plenty bright enough and no extra lights need to be mounted. Took a bit of figuring and wiring, but worth the effort. No where near as complicated as your fresh air mod which was super impressive.

Now this high beam as DRL's idea borders on genius!
Driving out in the Prairies and High Deserts really show how important DRL's really are. Distant Vehicles literally vanish in the "mirages" on the highways.
Once I put in the 6052 ecode assemblies, that wimpy VW high beam becomes rather unimportant. I'm not sure you even need them as working headlights.
Just take them out of service as headlights. Relay them to go off with headlights on!
Jeez....... another task to do!
