Well, well, well.........
They say no good deed goes unpunished!
I've been helping dabaron in Philly for about two years getting his 90 tintop sorted and later his full camper.
Never expecting anything in return I've given him parts and advice.
Come Spring 2021 I'll probably be fixing his A/C in the camper.
Last night while joking about dobryan getting his 3rd AND 4th Van he said I need a Van and can have his tintop.
Truth be told, I've been seeking a Van but "Gasp!" I've been looking at older 2010-2013 Ford Transit Connects! I know..... oh the shame!
Well, we texted, we talked tonight and came to a deal for his 90 tintop.
It needs the engine rebuilt or replaced, I'll talk to Dave (dobryan) about his takeout from his latest project.
My life is changing, I've been laid off for the Winter, due to Covid we didn't open for the 2020 season, not sure I'll be going back or not.
My Daughter in Reading Pa has been pushing to start a home repair business with her. She is one of those people who could "sell ice to an eskimo".
She is the Son I never had, cute as a button but can run circles around most guys at doing home repairs! ..... including her husband.
I redid her kitchen over the Summer and her friends are clamoring to have this or that done to their homes.
She is almost out of the Toddler stage of child rearing and looking for flexible work. She is a teacher but not sure she wants to go back to that right now.
I used my Prius to remodel her kitchen...... yeah, NOT doing that again! I need a Van!
Anyway, this is the perfect solution for now!
So starts another build thread!
Let's see where this Van takes us.
Anyway, a few photos..........

I don't know about dual purpose, but, as a straight work van, you can't go wrong with the vanagon. I have been using an '84 tin top as a work vehicle for years as a handyman and lite contractor. It carries all the tools I need for carpentry, plumbing and electrical. Full sheets of plywood and sheetrock can slide in from the back. Anything more than 12 ft long can go up on the roof. I am often at, or exceeding, 2,000 lb in tools and material. Find me a full-size truck that can do that while getting close to 20 MPG. That is, without costing me an arm and a leg for a new model. All in, I have purchased this vehicle and maintained it for several years for less than $5,000.

Cool.
Glad youre back in it.
Id recommend asking DOBryan if he will cut out & trade his (gray?) driver side westy swivel for your Tintop passenger seat. _________________

The empty body is a huge cavity.
I'm excited to figure out organization.
It is good to hear how good it works for you.
For years we had a local tradesperson here in NE NJ working out of a brown tintop. I would see it parked at various trade store or eateries, I was never able to talk to him but the Van vanished about two years ago. Retired? Moved? "Upgraded?"
I've got an HAULER aluminum rack on my F150 that I will probably modify to fit on the tintop.
I've had this rack on four different trucks over the years, this will be the first Van!
It has been a great rack with good customer service for parts.

As far as dual use? Removable storage will be key as well as working neat and not beating up the vehicle.
I never wanted to carry much in my camper for fear of damaging it.
This unit will be much more universal.
I may remove the rear folding seat and side trim upholstered side panels. Save them for trips.
I'll make up some luan or masonite panels for work use, easy in, easy out, nothing pretty.

Hooray!!! Between dobryan's van-for-every-time-zone builds and this one we'll have no shortage of good stuff to occupy our time.
In Seattle a good, straightforward home repair/remodel team doesn't need a web page or even business cards. They're booked out months in advance through word-of-mouth alone. _________________ - Jim

setting up a westy rear bench with removeable frabric like seat cushions on a boat.
then the rear is set up or down flat depending on the needs.
can still use as a seat for passengers in a pinch. albiet on wood. but most of the time it's flat for hauling..
another thing is it allows you to remake it full width to better suit the space.
also to note you already likely know, that with the pass seat turned sideways. you can haul 12ft trim inside. |

So glad to hear you are back in business. My '91 is not a dual purpose van. It is a sextuplicate use van. Don't want to hijack your thread, but thought a few ideas on a REAL Multivan might start you thinking.
I moved the rear heater to under the driver's seat and the ECU into the side wall in front of the DS rear wheel well. The slanted carpet covered part you see is directly onto of the firewall and consists of two pieces of 5/8" ply hinged with loose pin hinges. The one shown can hinge up adding 17 inches to the engine deck length. Then the one underneath hinges for another 17". A 6" piece is added to that gives a full 80" double bed length. All this started as just an idea to extend the engine deck for hauling plywood and other stuff, but it morphed quickly into a camper conversion.
Here are a couple of configurations.
In this one, the bed can go all the way out on the tailgate so it takes up zero floor space when deployed. We use the BD hatch tent which is fabulous.
And two versions where it can make a seat. The 6" extra piece turns into a back rest and has a cushion salvaged from the old seat and velcroed in place. The cushion is velcroed to the ply. The back rest has two sliding steel dowels which go into holes in the side tin. Not for driving, just when at the site.
The seat looks too narrow, but it's not. Just the photo angle.
And then the looking-over-the-harbor mode and finally the drive-in-movie mode.
The cut out was done later to see if it could make the seat more comfortable than just sitting on a chunk of ply. It did, but weakened the ply. This winter this section will be remade from 1" square steel tubing with zig zag springs and some foam. The steel will work to cary the loads when needed for that purpose.
And lastly, because the ply bed/seat/platform sections can easily be removed by pulling the loose pins on their hinges, we have with the addition of a couple of brackets which have matching color polar fleece on the back to protect the paint.
Does not need to be removed to close the door.
And the best part of all, if you have three PS doors handles, the thieves can't figure out how to steal your car.
A future addition is a wanigan stowed on a receiver hitch platform.
Good luck and keep us all posted.

A $400HF 4x8 trailer is in your future. You can find them used for half that.
Loading materials and bringing to job site is a snap with that and you can cover, unhook, etc easily. Trips to the dump for demo C&D, picking up bathtubs...easy.
I have a lumber yard where I drop the trailer and they load for me, then call to pick up.
Parts purchased to fit your work vehicle that fit a camper are still fully deductible business expenses per IRS ruling 666-1990 _________________ .ssS! |
