Well, what a beautiful afternoon!
The rack isn't done, I need to modify some brackets and it just didn't happen today.
I putzed on the Van checking things and thinking.
Coolant level is spot on! That leaking side tank is very minor.
The ATF? Still clear Red but with a tinge of burnt smell after yesterdays drive.
I'll drop that oil again. I figured it would take 20 qts, I'm only up to 10 qts right now.
I dug out my Rostra Cruise parts.
Thinking how to feed it, mount it and attach it to the throttle body.
I'm going to mount it under the back seat and feed the pull cable over the transaxle to the throttle body.
I can feed it through the firewall and secure it there.
I cleaned the Windshield well and fastened my EZ Pass behind the rear view mirror. EZ Pass is the automatic toll pay device here on the Eastern seaboard.
I ran an errand today and it happened to take me by my local Auto Paint guy.
I stopped in and after being robbed I brought home a quart of Single Stage Bordeaux Red metallic paint...... VW LC3Y
I mentioned before, I'm not a fan of base coat/clear coat systems.
$167 for this quart can!
Feeling empowered having paint I got out an artist brush, put a teaspoon of paint in a small bowl and a splash of hardener.
Mixed well and attacked the Van trying to improve my 15’ view.....
Before and after photos...... he did a decent mixing job.
Parking lot scrapes.....
Seat belt buckle damage ..... this is one of the worst I've ever seen!
I now have a case of paint scales! This will actually take a lot of work to fix properly.
Door opening edges......

Given the beautiful results, I'd say that $167 was a good investment. Maybe I need to rethink Interlux Dark Blue. |

Thanks! It did help an amazing amount!
The difference a mere teaspoon made is absolutely shocking!
I will eventually use that quart plus another and maybe another to repaint portions of the Van.
Keeping the color and not going for perfection makes brightening up the unit a fairly simple task.
The nose and the rear deck lid are the two areas screaming to be first.
The nose will probably win.
I have some white on hand, to cut solar gain I think I'll spray the roof white.
Nothing fancy, a quick wet sand and shoot it.
I have some Audi Silver I'll use on the bumpers and cladding. I also have some Ford Black for the mirrors and bumper "rubber" highlights. The door knobs and grills might get a shot with it too.
This is a work truck, not a family show car. I do not want to look like a wreck, but at the same time a big time and dollar investment are not needed.
If I can get a five foot job for $500? I'll be thrilled!
It will get soiled, scratched and dinged, no tears will be shed. Touch it up and move on.

Highly, highly recommend Interlux perfection 2 part. It dries super hard and can be rolled on with the sausage rollers and will leave a spray looking job. Comes in a variety of whites, so you don't have to have hospital white. Random orbital 320, wipe it down, tape it off and roll. No clean up as the rollers go away. The flat top is perfect for this job which is what I'm about to do. In a week or so the bulk of my top will be whiteish canvas which will also help reduce heat gain.
When I was the misguided youth and wanted a Unimog or an early Land Rover (the forest management/Paul Bunyan fantasy), with the forest of gear levers on the floor, I always admired the double top safari heat sun shield they had. Often thought of doing that on a bus, but............. Wonder if anyone ever did? Note the color on a green vehicle.

I'm also gathering bits to rebuild my headlight adjusters.
I've done this before and it worked wonderfully!
1/4-20 Stainless steel screws, a mix of lengths 1 1/2”, 2” and 2 1/2” I have more than I need.
1/4-20 stainless steel self locking nuts. Twelve (12) of these
1/4” Stainless steel flat washers two dozen (24)
1/8” nylon pipe plugs six (6)
3/8” nylon pipe plugs two (2)
1/2” nylon pipe plugs four (4)
1/8” brass pipe couplers three (3)
3/8” brass pipe coupler One (1)
1/2” brass pipe coupler two (2)
The screws / nuts / Washers came from Home Depot
The nylon Plugs from Tractor Supply
The brass pipe connectors from ACE hardware.
Honestly? $60 in materials. A HUGE savings over buying the real adjusters and these should last forever!
Another job waiting to be done.
It is good having what I need ready to go! A good rainy day project.

I’ve become one of those crazy owners who think it is ok to use TRACTOR paint on my Vanagon!?!?
Yep...... it's only on the roof and really? Who sees that?
$20 at Tractor Supply

When I had to rebuild my headlight adjusters, I was unaware that new plastic spiders were available. I took out the screws and wire brushed them. Then coated them in a release agent and gouped on some epoxy peanut butter. Never any problems after that. |
