I had a PM from bridgetroll13 showing me relays with a built in fuse!

He was thinking to protect the fuel injection system,

I haven't yet wired in fuses so I just ordered two of these. I'll be the guinea pig!

I'm intrigued....... I should have the relays by the weekend.

If they work, what a simple way to fuse the entire system! Just replace both relays with these.

Hopefully the lid fits over them.

I have some glow when they blow fuses I'll use. Probably 7 or 10 amps.

So my fused relays came......

But, apparently one should read the fine print!

If you want TWO relays, you don't order quantity (2) for apparently a quantity of (1) is SIX RELAYS!

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

So..... if these relays work and you would like just two individual relays, PM me, email me, call me....... it appears I have 10 extra relays!

I need to change the differential gear oil on my Automatic transaxle.

Being aware of Sodo's many posts about gear oil, wear, filtering and frequent oil changes, I sought out what the best option would be for me.

The expense of Synthetics negates the frequent change philosophy.
I'm also not convinced that everything synthetic is a better lubricant.
Labeling a bottle "synthetic" is a marketing hook, not unlike putting "organic" on food labels currently is.

Anyway, after much surfing and reading I stumbled upon this site ....

https://eastcoastgearsupply.com/ft-2536-ecgs-gear-oil-recommendation.html

Their common sense approach to gear oils appealed to me.

I now have bottles of Lucas gear oil ready to pour in.

Thank you, Dave. VERY important information. Luckily, I just have the standard WBX and don't tow--for now--so assume my diff loads are OK. However, the next time in the shop, I'll put in Lucas. What weight did you get? Haven't put the temp probe in yet, but the next warm epoxy day, I can do that.

Every TDI or Subie owner should read this East Coast Gear Supply report.

As I understand it, VW recommends 80W90 weight..... so that's what I purchased.

I'm not battling high temperatures to my knowledge.
I may put a bung in the differential oil pan as both a drain and a temperature sender probe point.

I'm also not over taxing the unit with many additional ponies like many engine swaps tend to do.

I've no idea of the wear on the unit, it is pushing 230,000 miles I'm guessing but who knows what service if any it has seen in the past 30 years?
The filler bung was overly tight and mangled so someone has done something.

The transmission oil in the transmission was chocolate brown and a little burnt smelling (or maybe it was a lot burnt smelling and I'm in denial), but with multiple ATF changes it seems to be working as it should after 1,500 miles put on by me.

I put in my two fused relays.
They fit just fine, lid closes with on problems.

I replaced the 30amp supplied fuse with 10 amp fuses.
I know in other discussions that 7amp is probably good but alas..... I had 5 amp or 10 amps.

Just went for a 100 mile drive, no problems at all.

I want to tow my light utility trailer so it was hitch and lights day!

I made all of my splices after the 7 pin plug in the weather proof box in the engine bay.

Neat and dry........ it even works!

Hitch is on!
Just a simple Curtis loop mount ball hitch.
Nothing fancy or super strong but the trailer it will tow is super light and likewise....... nothing fancy.

My tie down loops are about 1/4-3/8” too close and the hitch doesn't sit properly flat against the bottom of the loops.
I need to dig out my Porta Power and convince those loops to move ever slightly apart from each other.

Last pair of free fused relays is gone. Dave's relay giveaway is over.

The relays are performing well.
I expect no problems but am carrying my unfused ones...... you never know for sure until many miles roll on by.

I copied bridgetroll/your fused relay idea. Works great and I'm glad to have fuses on them now.

this should be added to the FAQ or something. it's a brilliant solution to a very real issue.

Dave needs to make his Bentley 2.0 available too. Laughing

Just got back from getting my 2nd Moderna Shot.

After a Beautiful ride through Berks County Pennsylvania farmland, the Van is relaxing at home for the afternoon.

If I feel OK, I might pull off the throttle body and see why it is sticking.

SEM Black Trim Paint is a favorite of mine. It would get that bumper up to spec of the rest of the van! The grills too.

Beautiful day for a drive.

Stay home on a day like this?

Oh heck no!

My Wife had her appointment for her 2nd shot so we went to that.

Then it started with "let's go get a frozen coke" and it turned into a multi hour aimless wandering through the forests eventually ending up at French Creek State Park.
Beautiful area.

On the way home we found Abraham Lincolns Great Great Grandfathers house here in Exeter Pa.
Daniel Boone grew up in town too. The two families did intermarry and the Boone homestead is but a few miles from the Mordecai Lincoln house.
The Boone family is said to have named Exeter after Exeter England.

Built about 1733........

Sadly this bumper needs WAY more than paint!
It is cracked and scratched and fractured.
It needs cans of resin, some mat and days of work!

I rebuilt mine.

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=689888&highlight=

Epody and fiberglass cloth. Polyester and mat are not strong enough unless laid up really thickly in multiple layers. Don't short the job on anything but the best and strongest materials.

I pulled the third seat and floor padding out today.

I don't want to sound like a rust paranoid Californian but I see rust! Typical behind the drivers seat crap.

I didn't pull the panel today, honestly? I'd rather not know what is behind that panel right now.
Whatever is there, will keep for awhile......

Most Westy owners would kill to have that kind of rust in that spot. Definitely can keep for awhile.
