Dave, I had this problem at my current house about 3 years ago. I hired a septic cleaning company and for about $400 they dug down to the top of the septic tank to where the manhole lid is, pumped the tank out, and then cleaned out the intake at the inlet baffle. That is where the clog was.

Best $400 I have ever spent!

After having been away from the Van for the weekend, we abandoned the malfunctioning septic house and retreated to NJ!

Ah...... flush toilets..... showers...... life's luxuries.
I get to dig up the tank next Tuesday for pumping...... always a fun time!

Anyway........ my white roof is amazing!
It dried hard and smooth. Again not perfect but oh! So nice!

Looking at the back. (Yes, that IS a dent in the roof! Darn PO's! )
The rear lift gate.......
I'm thinking of painting across the top of the rear glass.
I just followed the "door" gap over the top of the lid.

And.......

I stumbled upon a link in another thread to T3 selling a plasma instrument face kit.

http://t3technique.com/electrical/plasma-gauge-set/

It looks amazing!
I ordered one.

Yet another task.........

Dave

So i ordered six (6) Timken bearings for my Van.
I searched to find them. The outer rear bearing from Timken was near impossible to find!
I paid premium prices fir the expected quality too!

They finally all arrived!

Two for the Alternator, both in Timken boxes...... are they Timkens? .... NOPE!

Rear wheel outer bearing, Both in Timken boxes...... are they Timkens? ... NOPE!

Rear wheel inner bearings, Both in Timken boxes..... are they Timkens? .... NOPE!

Doing some searching of the brands, They are all brands owned by Timken....... but they aren't Timken bearings.

Color me disillusioned...........

Dave

They had quarts and also spray cans.

I bought two qts but only used one.

it would be interesting to KNOW, but i suspect the "Specialty Farm and Implement Enamels" are merely color/finish matched products and not a specific formulation for robustness.

I agree. Paint down to the top of the hatch glass. Glad your paint dried hard. My Interlux did not. I waited 4 days. Here I am striking a straight line using some aluminum door trim and scavenged speaker mags. They are really powerful and have two speeds. Super strong with the coil/cone side down and less so the other side. Take every free speaker you can get your hands on. Perfect for jigging and all kinds o' t'other stuff. When I pulled the tape after the cut, some paint came with it. No prob, will follow your advice and git me some good ole tractor paint.

Plan is a canvas top with the heaviest cotton canvas I could buy. 30 pound. It will get sealed with Rustoleum 2 part waterproofing which is amazing. Used it on my boat and water never gets through. Made a practice tarp of reinforced plastic which I get to play with tomorrow. Thinking of having two. One solid an t'other with super heavy clear boat vinyl sewed in as a sunroof version. All this gives me lots to play with so lots of fun. The solid might get laminated with the OG spring steel wire roof bows and new headliner. Have some salvaged and washed. OK for a test and maybe a final, but brand new white has some serious appeal. For winter I will use the slavaged inch plus OG batting insulation laminated to some headliner with the canvas applied over that. Have made 24 gutter clips with Plastidip to protect the paint in the gutter. Ordered blue, but it was horrific so got some black and toned it down. Not Orly blue, but far better.

Back in my company days had one of these as a........................well. I saw the ad in Hemmings and just HAD to have it. $4500. Long gone now and restored they bring 500K. Sigh. Anyhoo, this was my inspiration. Of course we didn't drive in winter, not at super highway speeds.

Tomorrow I'll get to know about the flapping component. When I first told my son about the idea, his comment was "loud and cold". He may be right. If so, these guys can always bail me out. https://www.sunroofsource.com/68-79-vw-bus-44x72-early-size-sliding-ragtop/

My hole measures 47 x 78. When I get farther along I'll do a write-up and post it.

After looking at it and at the photos......... I agree, I should do it before my leftovers dry up.

I however will not be cutting a giant hole in my roof. Laughing Shocked

The giant hole came about as not only do I like to stand up occasionally, but in driving the '87 to Oshkosh from Vermont one summer, we had the top open much of the way. i rigged a small plastic windshield and we slung a sling chair from the gutters and kept a nose gunner up there to take in the sights at speed. great fun. Safe? We were younger then and would live forever. But one of the real advantages was being able to stand to load awkward objects aboard, which with this "multivan" work /play vehicle will help make it more useful. And then I love the light and the ability to let trapped heat out in the summer.

It could easily be a huge mistake. I like to take risks and figure out solutions. A disease.

Duncan, Can you start a topic for your DIY sunroof build? I'd love to follow your work. Very Happy

I plan to do a write up on this project when I get a little farther down the road. I may be willing to take risks, but others may not and I don't want to blithely lead someone down a rosy path only to end in disaster with either a 2k hightop or 2k rag top they may not have wanted in order to salvage the vehicle. When I first told my son about the idea, his immediate reaction was "loud and cold". He very well may be right. However there are many ways to skin this cat including plexiglass or tempered glass up there.

I also plan to write up the window mod which can be seen if you look closely in this photo which I originally posted here in reaction to Dave's rusty roof.

This was the "no going back now photo". It also needs some refinements and the motor added. Right under the fixed glass at the back end of the opening is a crank to check out the mechanism and find interference spots. Was waiting for a decent pop rivirt gun to show up to finish the job, but my crappy no name Bezos wonder gave up after only 25 rivets. Never buy the cheapest item from anyone. It was a great day on Saturday so that's why the roof project jumped ahead in the priority list. And then there is the hole in my engine deck too.

For other roof painters, this stuff looks promising and not overly dear.

Life is BUSY right now!

Between tasks that need doing, work and moving I've zero spare time!

I've a pile of parts to install and a list of Van tasks that need doing!

With the change of the season, A/C has migrated to the do it sooner rather than later list!

Gathering parts for my rear bearing replacement. I had inquired with TK if he had any stub axles lying around still.
He said he didn't know but would look.
Meanwhile I ordered a pair from the classifieds here.

He called yesterday that he has a carrier housing.
He's sending it to me, with it I'm going to build up an axle side complete and then just quickly swap it in.
Then build up the other side and do likewise.
I'm going to order a 3rd stub shaft and build up a spare assembly to carry on my long Western journeys.
From what I read, new rear wheel bearings may not be all that robust!

When one goes out on MT 200 in nowhereville, I want my repair parts onboard!

Today is dig up the septic tank for pumping day!
Oh happy happy joy joy!

Dave
