Here is my Right Rear outer wheel bearing.
I ran this for almost 4,000 miles! (All the rollers were in place, I knocked them out to see how badly the race was rusted)

No, I won't be sharing who he is until he makes good on this axle.
He is saying the tight nut is just fine, use a strong air ratchet to get it to spin on!
Then he says that once tight with the air ratchet, use a seven foot pipe to tighten it up!
Even if you're only a 100lb person, that's 700 ft lbs!

If you need a strong air ratchet to thread a nut on..... you've got a buggered axle shaft!

He was telling me how to install the nut! I've been doing VW rear axle nuts since the 1960’s!

If he refuses to make it right, I'll share who the seller is ...... just not in a positive manner.
I paid via PayPal..... I will get my value back if I must go that route.

Out driving in Coal Country, found another new old friend.
This is just outside of Catawissa.

I have no idea what it is.
1930’s Ford?

Climbing over the summits and crossing the Appalachian Trail.

Van ran well, brakes smoothly and is a renewed joy to drive with the new wheel bearings.

I do notice an intermittent high RPM miss.
One of those misses that could also be the road surface beat by heavy trucks too.
Something to keep an eye on and worry about!

Ah, the dreaded highway hiccup. I am chasing it too. I did the GW AFM filter, no change. Resoldered all the points on my ECU and that vastly improved it. I would try baking the whole ECU before I tried resoldering each point in the future. Resoldering was a tedious process but it turned the highway hiccup to once every 15-40 minutes to once every 3-6 hours.

When the threads are distorted, the metallurgy has been altered.
Even if I were to run a die over the distorted threads, the strength is gone.

My problem is, you told me you have good used stub axles. Just send me a good used axle!
Don't send me trash and then tell me how to make it work.

I already have two garbage axles, I really don't need a third! And pay you for the privilege!

Well, I just got back to Reading at rush hour..... happy happy joy joy!

I ended up on the 222 bypass which has a 55 mph speed limit......
But
NOT at rush hour!

I ended up setting a land speed record for my ownership!
73 mph at 4100 rpm's.
Rock steady as she rolled!
I'm sure 4100 rpm did wonders for my gas mileage!
But probably no worse than being in 2 (automatic) climbing a steep pass doing 45 mph at 4100 rpms!
The passes have less head winds but more gravity to fight.

I much prefer driving my backroads ........
but every once in a while.....
the dreaded highways must be used.

Dave

i find myself watching the tach more than my speed when i'm on the highway. i know i won't be the fastest out there so i'm not on the cop's radar. my concern is the engine guzzling gas instead of simply drinking it. i'd love to get 250 miles from a tank.

250 sounds light. How 'bout filling and having a 5 gallon standby and driving until out and see what the range is. I remember the beetles with no gauge and you had to go by mileage. I'm a stick, but get around 300.

I agree on range. It's not about stopping as we do all the time anyway. It's more about just not having to worry about it which I why I'm adding 15 more gallons this fall.

I am consistently turning 16mpg's +/- but generally 16 and a fraction.
16 x 16 = 256 miles per tank.
This is GPS miles, not VW odometer miles (though they are very close to each other)

Still not trusting the gauge fully I carry a 2 gallon can with me.

I'm wishing for 17 or 18 but not yet happening consistently though I have touched upon this range.

My first car was a 1960 Beetle, no gauge, the worst was forgetting to reset the lever upon fill up after using the reserve!

I've gotten 16.75 pretty consistently for the last 2000-plus miles. I drive with a heavy foot, but live in the mountains so lots of downhill coasting too. Just another 2.1 AT mileage data point.

Haven't checked lately, but got 20.5 on a 200 mile trip a couple of summers ago after the rebuilt was installed. Next fill-up I'll check for around town.

Pretty well stripped out. No rear seats at all and sometimes not even the passenger seat. And now the roof tin is also gone.

Duncan, you drive a standard.. it's really not an apples to apples comparison.
certainly not a benchmark for the automatics.

to add some context we have 2 swapped vanagon automatics
the 2.5l I5 gets 16 highway and can get 18 on meandering backroads..
the 1.8T with big tires gets 16-17mpg all around.

really it's the event horizon of going over 60mph that slides the MPG figure down.

I am running OE VW Lobros.

I've worked out a solution with the axle seller, I think he thinks my standards are too high.
But being a NAASRO safety official, fastener quality is of the utmost importance!
You don't reuse fasteners in certain locations, in others, if the nut won't spin on freely, you've got trash in your hands!
