Thanks for the photo. I didn't realize how small the interior volume is. Looks fine for premade sandwiches and drinks on the road, but not for camping. I guess I'll just keep on using my leakproof soft guy which fits nicely between the seats. It has a double zipper with a handle between, so easy to open the 4" wide flap and fish out the drink and then zip back. Yes, ice is a pain, but it certainly outlasts my 250+?? mileage range. And at ten fillings a year--half come from our home fridge--I can't complain about the annual costs. You have great convenience, but EV range anxiety? Save that for the next one with the double layer of batteries under the floor and the one moving part motor in the back.
My dream has always been on a long trip to say: "Honey, could you go back and make a sandwich for me?" But she has to be able to stand up and I finally have that reasonably well under control now so the big camping cooler hopefully will get some serious use this summer and maybe the long awaited stand-up-sandwich.
"Reasonably well under control" Lots will doubt that statement considering the pic, but as long as it doesn't rain, hardly any air comes into the car.

When I did my wheel bearings I pulled both axles and CV's.
I'm running new 6mm bolts that only have less than 4,000 miles on them.
As I loosened them the hex on the third one slipped.
What the??? ........
Turns out my Craftsman hex socket from the 1980’s had finally said "ENOUGH!".
The tip was not only worn but it was twisted.
I took it to the grinder and cleaned it up. This restored functionality but it is time to renew this socket.
I shopped around but only found a lot of iffy named tools. Stanley, harbor freight, XYZ, whatever.
Then up popped a Wiha 6mm 3/8” drive long hex....... sold!
More than I wanted to spend but for me it will be a lifetime tool. My last 6mm hex ever. (Unless I lose it)
Looking forward to its arrival so I can add it to my ever increasing travel kit and carry it around the Country showing it the sights!

Well, by the time I make it to the Delaware tomorrow morning I'll be turning 5,000 miles since we hit the road!
I was in Bloomsburg the past few days, my gas gauge is going to be the death of me!
You remember running out of fuel in the driveway months ago.
It hasn't improved much but I haven't yet run our of fuel.
I've been trying to establish a "normal" for what the gauge says and what's in the tank.
My gauge is defying any pretense of normal and plays "let's confuse Dave!"
Yesterday on the way to Bloomsburg I filled up in Catawissa then continued on to Bloomsburg.
I then drove home through Catawissa back to Reading.
This morning I drove from Reading, back through Catawissa to Bloomsburg.
On the way home today I looked at the gauge and thought "I'm doing well", passed through Catawissa figuring that based on Mileage that I would get gas at the Sunoco in .Bernville.
Sometime before Minersville I looked at the gauge and thought "OH CRAP!" That gauge is way down in the red!"
I stopped at an Exxon and played "Fight for a pump" with a Giant Ford Pickuo lugging a trailer..... I won!
Filled it up but it only took 12.3 gallons!
Did some Math, I'm getting 16.9 mpg through the hilly Pennsylvania Coal Country!
Happy about the fuel mileage but this gauge? ........ I'm going to kill!
I keep mileage records but I've gotten from 14+ mpg to 17+ mpg so any mileage estimates need to be calculated low.
I trust this gauge so little that I always carry 2 gallons of gas with me.
Anyway, happy 5,000th birthday and it is running good!

in the automatics I always figure mpg @ 15mpg... it's jut easier on the math.. and less pushing it to the side of the road.
15 gallons at 15mpg is 225miles... so about 200miles start looking.. _________________

Not much happening on the Van.
Everyday I turn the key and it starts........ just like it should.
I take it and work out of it. I pick up supplies, I haul away debris and I fight to get organized!
To date I've been using milk crates, pails and boxes to carry tools and fasteners in.
I'm figuring out what I need on a daily basis.
Today I purchased some organizer / tool boxes. I spent too much but if they help lower the stress and reduce the clutter? They will be worth ten times what I paid!
I got home early, I ignored the tall grass and emptied my Van.
It is all back in, tomorrow is the beta test!
You need to understand how rare old VW Vans are here.
I am getting comments almost daily about the Van. We’ve even got some work leads because of it!
It is better than a billboard!

I use the trip odometer not the gas gauge. YMMV. |
This is key for me. I ran short of gas at 287 miles once and consequently like to fill between 250 and 275!
I was able to nurse the van to an exit and down hill to a gas station - but I hadn't run out of gas in over 35 years and it was traumatic. _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX
