Get the company to pony up a few $$$'s for a Wrap with your logo, and .com on it. THEN you'll get some work Wink

If you recall one of the used stub axles I had purchased was shipped to me as "good used" even though the nut would only thread on 1/2 turn or so by hand then lock up solid.
I ended up spending hours filing the threads with my limited on hand tool supply to get the nut to thread on by hand past the cotter pin holes.
Even then it was less than perfect and I'm not at all happy about it.

I contacted the seller about the deformed threads, Jan Blair & Son used auto parts, who told me that tight nuts are normal and to use a heavy duty impact wrench to get the nut on.

I replied that No, deformed threads are a sign of a deformed and abused stub axle.
An axle with the threads all stretched and deformed is garbage.
He offered to replace the axle if I picked up the shipping or he would refund me the axle cost.
I still need a good stub axle so I agreed to pay shipping if he promised a good stub axle.

Well it arrived.
The nut spins on freely, there is no sign of a die run over it that I can see.

All is well that ends well.
He is a responsive seller, has fair prices and ships quickly.
I would buy from him again, just be very clear about what you expect, as in the case of the stub axle threads.

Hah!

I just discovered my 90 Automatic will Start in Park, Reverse, Neutral, D or 2 ......

Time to check backup light operation and pull the shift housing apart.

See what field "improvements" the PO made for me!

Now that I have the good stub axle, I will assemble it with new bearings in the extra bearing carrier I got and swap out the marginal assembly as a whole.

I will then carry that as an emergency roadside repair part.

a bit excessive to carry as a roadside emergency item.
engines fail far more frequently and w/o warning compared to a rear wheel bearing.

add in the fun fact of having to pop apart the rear backing plate as it's side positionally dependent.

bearing give plenty of notice before failure.

My Van had a friend come and visit yesterday.
This was the first Vanagon he has seen in quite awhile except for his step brother dbaron........

Sadly I failed to take any photos but dobryan was here for a few hours in his subie powered pop top.

He really liked my Hauler Rack. Cool

And...... we failed on sending him home ice cold....... but we have a plan.........

Just got home from a trek over the Appalachians.......... turned 6,500 miles on the journey.

The RF tire is wearing on the outside. The LF tire is fine. Ideas?
It does tend to drift to the right while driving.

Sounds like it is time for an alignment before you pay more money for new tires....

That is correct, but in person they look quite different. If they are the same person, The make up artists talent is simply amazing!
One is far more good looking than the other.

I am gathering what I consider essential parts to carry on an 8,000 mile journey I have planned across the Northern USA.
I don't want to be in places like Winnett Mt on Mt 200 broken down and helpless.

Parts are getting hard if not impossible to get in this post-Covid lock down era.
The World supply chain is quite simply broken.
I have already gathered many parts that now show as out of stock and have unknown restock dates.

An item yet in my inventory is a Water Pump.
There is much chatter about which brand is less bad of the readily available brands..... Hepu, Graf or Meyle.

Searching for other historically trust worthy brands I stumbled upon an in stock Gates Pump.
It was a few $$’s more and no free shipping but I figured "why not?"
I am running a Hepu pump with only 6,500 miles on it but I read horror stories of short pump lives.
My belt is adjusted loose, I get a bit of squeal on a cold start.
I may never need this pump but hey! I will have it.
I've read advice to soak a new pump in antifreeze before installation to lubricate the seal.
I've also read that older dirty coolant contributes to short pump life.

Anyway here is the Gates part......
Gates #gat41153

Once it arrives I'll check it out and post my findings. If it is simply a Meyle in a Gates box, it will be going back!

Dave
