Well.......
yesterday dawned dark and wet.
It drizzled throughout most of the day.

Changing oil was the last thing I felt like doing.
I organized tools and other stuff, sorted through hastily packed boxes and basically wasted a day.

This morning it was BEAUTIFUL!
I dropped the auto trans oil and oil pan.
I was thrilled to see no new debris field of transmission bits since the last ATF oil and filter change.

I cleaned things up, installed a bung for a temperature sender, a task that I didn't do last time.

I used Hylomar and coated the original gasket, I really didn't feel like fighting an ill fitting new gasket!

Reassembled the trans pan and refilled with ATF ...... about 2 1/2 quarts.

I dropped the engine oil, pulled the oil filter and cleaned things up.
I checked the sandwich gauge plate to make sure it is still snug.

New filter, a smear of Hylomar on the plug, 4 qts Mobil 1 15/50 and off we went!

I certainly hope that persistent transmission oil leak is gone ......... if not?
I'll install the new gasket.
I really don't mind changing ATF....... I think that is one of e best services one can perform on these aging rigs.

Because my Van is a Daily Driver for work, and there isn't an automatic accelerator cable to be found in the States or Canada (with my search skills)...... VW # 251 723 555E and that makes me a tad jumpy not having one should the need arise, I just ordered one from VW Classic Parts in Germany.

It was probably me but I couldn't get the site to ship to the US so I sent it to a friend in Dorset England who will forward it on to me.

The automatic cable goes to the transmission where it connects to the adjustable accelerator rod to the throttle body.
This provides kick down function.

Well SHOOT!

You can substitute the two "O's" for a Capital "i" if you wish.........

My auto trans oil pan is dripping ATF!

Crap, Crap, Crap , CRAP!

Oh well, I'm not against yet another ATF change but I am puzzled about the leak.
I have a new gasket...... just HATE fighting them!

An "another day" task....... more inches of rain are in the forecast.
Wish I could contain it all and send it to you Western folk........

Heavy Sigh..........

Had a similar problem. Turned out to be a bad gasket on a round cover plate on the side of the tranny.

If the sealing surface of the pan is distorted around the bolt holes, flatten them out with a hammer, placing a socket on the other side to pound against.

Seeking daily organization I raised the floor to accommodate those long loose items that shift and wander while driving.
I’m making it high enough to store some hardware boxes under the floor too.

Fabulous. I'm seeing Duncanization happening at full force. This will be a candidate for the Multivan thread. Insulation and sound control all in one shot.

Drawers at the PS and a lift cover for the area behind?

Love the bucket retainer.

Once the layout was as I thought it should be I put a layer of scrap 1x2 on top of the 2x4 creating a 4 1/4” height.

This was covered with 3/8” plywood with a square cut out for the bucket you mention.

Not perfect, still refining but every step is an improvement.

One hour? Doubtful.

Years ago when I was a kid I had a bidness with a school buddy. We called ourselves Decks Unlimited as a pun on the Ducks Unlimited environmental outfit. Decks were and still are the cheapest way to get more useable space out of your house and we kept pretty busy. One owner gave us a set of plans he had drawn up crudely, but all anyone needed to give him what he wanted. So, I figured every 2x. Every nail and screw. Every bucket of Cuprinol to protect the 4 x 4 posts. Every bag of concrete, stain and ad nausium. Then the labor. So much to get the stuff, dig the holes, mix the sackrete and so on. I gave my estimate to my partner who was the numbers guy. He tripled my time estimate and added 20% on top of the whole shebang. When we handed in the quote, the guy got a super puzzled look on his face. Sir? "This is amazing, you are within 50 cents of the other guy's quote."

So maybe three hour plus 20% Duncanizing. And as I'm getting older, better call it "Possibly same day Duncanizing".

Automatic Transmission cooler.......

FAS
I've had one in the past and was pleased with the simplicity of it.

I chose to keep my coolant based transmission oil cooler on this 90 because I was feeling cheap........

The FAS oil cooler runs $300 ........

http://www.foreignautosupply.com/parts-accessories/1-automatic-transmission-heat-sink/#.YTvSurIpChA

I like that there are no oil lines to worry about leaking or getting snagged on something.
I am not a hard user who pushes the transmission to its operating limits.

I am battling coolant leaks and one of the leaks is the mid run Tee which feeds the stock cooler.

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=759312

I could easily replace that hose but I wonder if I am being short sighted and should just eliminate it altogether.

But $300 for a chunk of Aluminum.......

This isn't the type of item you find used in junk yards either...... it is new bite the $$ bullet or go without.

A decision for this weekend ....... $300 or not......
sssh...... (Anyone have one and HATES it?)

remember... the trans oil 'cooler' is a heat exchanger, just as important to warm up trans fluid quicker for possibly better mpg, but certainly reduced emissions. i don't think there's data on how much it actually functions as a cooler vs an emissions benefit from warmer fluid earlier.

were it mine, i'd ditch the cooler to decrease coolant loop complexity, increase heater loop flow for better heat output, eliminate a trans fluid>coolant leak intrusion point and just add a trans temp gauge to monitor things. but i live in the frozen north and am willing to slow down if it gets hot.

A local trip along Manatawny Creek.

Just went for a fun little drive.
A local creek in the Oley Valley is Manatawny Creek it is crossed by a couple of covered bridges and it flows through older farm land with winding roads along it.

I never noticed it before but Earl Township has a little aging park along the creek.
There is an old retaining wall with several staircases down to the creek to go wading or swimming in some deeper holes.
It all harkens back to an older simpler time of picnics and swimming on lazy Sunday Afternoons.

The Park took quite a hit from Hurricane Ida a few weeks ago with some massive erosion and a high water mark that submerged almost the entire park.

Today, it was peaceful and calm.
A great place to stop at and kill a little bit of time.......

Here is the water cooled Auto Trans cooler ........ this is on my spare Automatic....

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I've sealed my oil pan twice now and the leak seems to be the same.

It is not dripping down from higher up but the pan to case seam is oily.

I'm wondering if it isn't a seeping Oring at the lower cooler Banjo bolt?

You can see the lower mount/fluid passage in this photo.......

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

It is very hard to see up there, I'm thinking I may drop the nose and have a look but I would like to have new O rings in hand before I do.

I'll need to search the size.

VW # 089 409 069 13mm x 2.5 mm Four needed.
