Well the logic here is the originals rust internally and turn your ATF into a pink milkshake.

But then again, radiator based American ATF coolers have been rusting out for decades!

Does one roll the proverbial die and gamble?.......

Went out to the Van with Jack and jack stands.

Jacked it up and crawled under all prepared to put new Orings on the Oil Cooler.

With the increased space (I usually don’t bother jacking it up to work underneath) I had a real clear view of the lower oil cooler mating to the case.

No matter what angle I looked at it from there was no evidence of a leak.

I decided to clean up the entire area and see if I can locate the exact leak source.
A can of brake cleaner and I cleaned everything from the oil cooler to the differential mount area.

After it dried I started up the Van and let it run. I varied the rpms but didn’t drive anywhere.

After the radiator fan kicked on I crawled under while it was still running with my flashlight.

My leak originally seemed to come from the oil pan front edge.
Absolutely dry!

Dipstick tube?
Dry

Oil pan sides?
Dry

Oil cooler seal areas?
Dry

2nd gear piston?
Dry

Seal to differential?
Dry

Lower left nut holding the transmission to the Differential.
Soaking WET!!!

I let it run longer and eventually the oil filled the seam between the two units….

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

You could watch the oil bubble out of the washer below the nut ….

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I removed the nut and washer, cleaned the area up, smeared it with Hylomar and reassembled.
Started it up…….
It promptly leaked!

Ok …… split lock washer ….. no good.

I had a heavy 8mm washer and an 8mm cap nut.

Cleaned everything up, used my Hylomar and reassembled.

Went for a 20 minute drive…….

Dry as a bone!

YES!

I realize it isn’t fixed……
But it isn’t leaking either!

i did a B&M cooler on mine. with the Derale thermostat and fittings, gauge etc i was under what many ask for their coolers plus it's nice being able to watch the temps. and no annoying buzz/whine like some folks complain about.

Yeah……. I’m undecided about an oil cooler change.

I read it is also a transmission warmer.
This is a daily driver even in the Winter.
I’m thinking any help to warm up the oils and mechanicals is a good thing.

There is a risk of Strawberry milkshake but how big is that risk?

A gillion years ago, my company bought:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.
It came with a 6 cylinder flathead Hercules motor? which didn't have enough power for a full load of crazies and Vermont hills. We tossed in a something bigger with an auto tranny. Blew through a couple of trannies and then installed a cooler. No more issues.

Duncan

P.S. Ours was yellow, but came with maroon fenders and stripes. Very classy. Wish it were still around.

No........ Pa is rear plate only.
My front bumper needs work I know.
It is on the short list before Cold settles in....... but so are 29 other projects.

Firewood may trump them all!

Cleaned up...... again.....
Repairs made ...... again ......
Repair cured over night ........
Now for a nice "high speed" drive to see if it stays dry.
It's kinda "Rube Goldberg" but if it works, is it yet another Duncanization?

Fingers crossed.

I have a spare transaxle I hope to rebuild over the Winter. I just want to stop dripping oil wherever I park right now.

Dave..a drywall mixing tub from Lowe’s will slide right under there, and costs $6

If you get rainwater in it, just add 50 ml of gas, touch it off to burn the HC, then dump the residual in a safe place away from a well

If you light off the mixing tub with the gas in it while still under the car, then you won't have to worry about the leaking tranny.

I could write a Children's book ...... "The Big Messy Dripping Engine"

It would be about drive train leaks and the adventures and frustrations of finding them and fixing them.

It wasn't a long ride Yesterday but we are still dripping!

Absolutely isolated to the dipstick tube fitting!

Will it never end?!?

if he waits until it gets cold outside he won't even need fire wood. a win-win if you ask me Cool

as for Dave's leak, i have been frustrated by a leaking crank seal at the pulley end so i totally empathize with him.

So I just dropped the ATF again.
Simply pulled the dipstick tube and let it drain for an hour or so.
Goobbered up any sealing surfaces with Hylomar and reassembled.
3 quarts ATF added back in.

Tomorrow is a Jersey run, if it is going to leak, this will
Reveal it fairly quickly.

I’ll check the level after it warms up on the way tomorrow.

Welcome home from NJ!

200 miles, and a Van full of used Vanagon Parts.

I stopped on the way and added about 6 oz of ATF, just a smidge over half way between the dots now.

On the way home I stopped at Huff’s Church and used their empty parking lot as a check up place.

I crawled under with a flashlight and saw a dry dipstick tube and a dry oil pan!!!!
Cue Charlie Brown’s Snoopy happy dance music!

I’m thinking I might do some bumper and cladding repair this weekend….. mild temps, dry….. it will make a huge 20’ visual difference!
