Well Bad News / Good News …….

First the bad news……. I absolutely 100% forgot about and missed my 200,000 mile rollover!

The good news?
All the numbers rolled over!
And
It is STILL adding numbers!!
It is just too bad my title says 218,000 miles! 😂😂😂🤷🏼‍♂️

The good news is the odometer turned over just fine. Check it again and take a photo in 9,986 miles. Being of a weird type of analyzing mind, I like symmetry and alway look for that. So yes, 200,000 has a nice ring to it, I actually prefer 200002. The bad news is you don't have a brand new vehicle. But congrats on having a 200k T3 with zero fluid leaks.

So what's the guess on how many miles Dave's car has on it? I've had a ton of odo failures over the years and have fixed them all. I think I even took a splitty back to 00000 when I redid it. Sometimes they went for months without working and that was when it was the only car I had so understand uncertainty of mileage. My personal mileage is mounting and wish I knew how to disconnect that odo. Current T3 is undergoing dash work and maybe several hundred miles without recording it.

On our Vans, the total body mileage is almost meaningless now.
Value is more about condition and about rebuilt system age now.

When I got the Van the odometer was about 189,000.

When I later got the title it indicated close to 218,000 miles.
Steve had apparently replaced the speedo unit with a used one because it stopped working.
How far did he go? Who knows? Who cares?
The only old original (if it even is) wear item still running is the Automatic Transmission.

Fortunately there wasn’t a visual required by DMV so I just added a few hundred miles onto the transfer papers and called it good. This avoided a lot of paperwork aggravation and it will soon catch up.

It is a non issue for me.

You are absolutely right about the mileage on the body and much of the other parts as well. There have been dozens of people on Samba who have essentially made their cars brand new starting with one of who knows how many miles or condition. I've always said that when Uncle Harry's inheritance comes through, I'll go to FAS and give them the 22 page single spaced double sided list of "things". They would then ask the question, "Do you provide the base vehicle or do we"? It wouldn't make any difference. In fact having the bragging rights of a 500k mile T3 has some qualities.

On the other hand,

This with only 30k has some pretty nice qualities too. But it's still 36 years old and will need the standard upgrades from new engineering understanding about some of the OG systems along with stuff which degrades just from the years and not necessarily from use.

Completely agree. The 88 we're having some work done on had done 40k km when we got her in Jan (been used as the UK embassy wagon in Libya and then parked in a garage, imported into the UK in 2018 and then garaged again). Yep, it's clean and rust free but it's still an old vehicle that requires quite a bit of modernisation.

I’ve mentioned several times on how the Fall (Autumn to you Brits) of 2021 has been kind of “lackluster”.

While the color intensity and variety has indeed been limited, on the other hand Fall has gone on FOREVER!
The leaves are simply lingering.
We are mostly browns, yellows and golds yet they hang on.

This is the field to the right of my house……

Well, in coordination with the arrival of cold weather my Fuel Rails and heater housing clips have arrived from VanCafe. (In my humble opinion based upon personal experience, expensive, but the gold standard of fuel rails)

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Sadly, I smell coolant with the front heater on.

So not only do I need to reseal the flaps and fix the blower fan, I strongly suspect that my heater core is leaking slightly.
I want to have one on hand when I pull the unit.
In light of the bad heater core thread from a few years back detailing poor heat output from various brands of cores,

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...70a49eacba

I sent an email to BusDepot on Monday asking about their core. They are just down the street a bit and I can pick one up easily.

Anyway, I’m not doing heater this weekend anyway, let’s see what response I get next week?

I’ve plenty if other things to keep me busy!

$75 doesn't sound too bad when you compare that with the cost of other things, such as a rebuilt throttle body, AFM or ICV. You've convinced me. They aren't that big and I'll bet Santa could stuff them in my stocking. I'll send him a note.

Air handling was clips. Guess it's gonna happen. Wish I could be along side so I could watch and do mine at the same time. 30 years and as far as I know, the dash has never been out. I've got a host of stuff I'd like to do, but as a DD it's tough to get to things which tie it up like that. Perhaps this next spring along with the 53,784 other to-dos. Heat and flaps work, no coolant smells, so not immediately imperative.

Good luck with it.

Well, Fred made contact today about the front heater core.
He assures me that BusDepot's are sealed and do not bypass.
Sadly he also said inventory is low and they only have units left with damaged fins.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

He offered a generous discount which I took him up on,
A bent fin bothers me not, as long as the coils are good and leak free.

I'll order a blower motor as well.
It will be a nice drive to go pick these up, though yesterdays windy rain storm pretty much erased Fall.

On my last heater box reseal I used foam head liner as a flap seal. I think I'll order up some thin wet suit rubber and try that.

EDIT: rubber ordered

Texting with Steve today (my PO ....... dabaron) I made the comment that my 90 GL is my "Go To" vehicle.
My Prius will sit for a week.......Unused.

I will be surprised when the day comes that it does not start or has running issues!

It is truly my daily driver and I expect it to drive every day.

BEAUTIFUL DAY!!!!!

A last gasp of near 70° weather, bright sunshine and gentle breezes…….

My order at BusDepot was ready for pick up so off I went to BusDepot….. in my Van!
The very first visit my Van ever made to the place that provided so many critical life giving parts to its resurrection.

There were no Ooohs or Ahhhs…… just another beat up old Bus getting parts.

I now have a heater core (damaged but not badly), a new front blower fan, a new four speed blower fan switch (which I’ll put on my A/C and move the three speed to the heater fan).

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

My wet suit rubber came today too for the flap seals.
I am about ready to fix my heat!

Found out this was probably my Vans first and last time to BusDepot because they are moving down the street to East Greenville.
The new location will be about the same distance from my house as their current location but a much calmer back road ride in its entirety! YES!!!
I Should remember to fuel up before leaving the Valley for there are no gas stations until I arrive at their new location.

Lookie what popped up! Will never come remotely close to Dave with his 28.5k, but it is symmetrical--at least in the Arabic numerical designation to the base ten system.

Driving through the Outskirts of Reading and there next to the road is a Steam Locomotive!
I've been down this road before....... I never noticed this before.......

While this is a tourist line, Reading still has an extremely active rail freight system.
It seems like there are always train whistles to be heard in the distance from our house.
Mixed in with the Diesel whistles is an occasional Steam Whistle........
A Strangely comforting distinct sound.
I only caught the very end of the steam era as a child, but there is something magical about a steam belching monster......

It isn't unusual to sit and wait at a RR crossing for 10 minutes or longer.

Anyway.......

Reading & Northern #225

They call it the Outer Reading Station.

https://www.rbmnrr-passenger.com/schedule

It is an import....... made in Canada.
It is also "prettied" up with Christmas Lights and streamers off of the smoke stack, oh the injustices the elderly suffer..........

I can't say that I'm a fan of the 2022 color Palette ........ screaming Yellow and Purple......... Rolling Eyes
