There should be two rubber bumpers in the lip of the glove box. Little conical shaped things apply a little bit of opening pressure against the lid and tensions the latch against the striker.
The striker hangs from the top of the opening in the form of a tongue of metal with a rectangular hole. This has to be "adjusted" so the latch hooks onto it when closing and releases it to open. The pressure from the rubber allow the door to open just enough so when the button is released the latch misses the striker and the lid continues to open. It took me weeks of fiddling to get it right.

That makes sense. I've played around with it several times in the past and have yet to find that perfect adjustment. In my case the hinges on the either side are not perfectly aligned (or bent) so they cause additional friction. The hinges also seem to be a very touchy adjustment. _________________ Marc

obus that is a lovely selection of cars to choose from on a beautiful day!
On the glovebox buttons, the Beetle ones are the same up to 1967 - you have to push it in while the door needs to come the other way. I fitted an accessory locking handle to my Beetle, but the locking button on the Ghia convertible has no handle. I think the key will act as something to pull on when turned though. One option would be an EMPI style glovebox pull, but it does mean drilling two holes: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2092042 |

Yes, the key can be used as a pusher and a puller, but you are in the same possition - pushing and pulling with the same part of the button. _________________ The glory never gets old, just need new paint.

I have the same problem with my 71 which has a 62 dash. Early Ghia's with the push button glove box door did not come with this finger hold so it should not be necessary, yet the design doesn't make sense, when these were new, how did the door open outward when the button requires a push in the opposite direction? There must be another fix? _________________ Marc

But you need to do one yourself, cause convertible glovebox buttons are bigger! _________________ The glory never gets old, just need new paint.

I've tried reaching on German sites with the following key words...
Öse elliptisch
Ovalöse für segeltuch
Ovalöse messing vernickelt
plannenzubehör ovalöse
plannenzubehör elliptischöse |
Try again for spelling "plannen..." with one n in the middle- Planen...- which is the correct spelling in German based on the root word Plane (sounds like PLAH-neh). Also, nouns are always capitalized in German but that might not make a difference in a word search entry. |

On the topic of the boot, Has anyone found a source for the eyelets that go on the boot and attach to the turnbuckles on the back shelf? Pictured here are the original turn buckles with one original eyelet.
I've been searching for a while and the ones I find are all oversized for the original turnbuckles.
I've tried reaching on German sites with the following key words...
Öse elliptisch
Ovalöse für segeltuch
Ovalöse messing vernickelt
plannenzubehör ovalöse
plannenzubehör elliptischöse
.. but I not found anything that comes close. What options are out there? If I drive with the top down with the back seat folded the air flow fills up the centre part of the boot and it wants to blow away.

Thanks Marcdeb and Rome! Rome is the round white piping on the edge of the entire boot? |
I just went into the garage and pulled out the boot from the rear luggage area where it's stowed. The black canvas original VW boot has the piping all around the "high ridge" of the boot, going from the front of the boot at the front of the quarter panel all the way around to the same point on the other side. The smooth ivory vinyl piping has a diameter ~ 3/16". Even though the boot is for a slightly later year Ghia than the one that came with my car (and I can't find it in the basement although I rarely throw anything out), it fits the car well as to the fastening snaps. The piping location is like the boot on moogie32's '63 seen here, though that boot is an original vinyl .
