Some updates on the bus.....
Installed Clara's door panels over the weekend. First time I've done this. Having the door off made it a much easier task, imo. Most of the existing panel mounting holes on the door were enlarged and unusable, so a few new holes were drilled. I was able to keep the hardware spacing equal for the most part. I think it turned out pretty nice.
Had the flywheel on the engine resurfaced and a new clutch and pressure plate installed.
I installed a new heater cable as well as rebuilt heater boxes on the engine. I need to find 2 Heater Baffles located by rear torsion tube.
Finished up hard brake lines and finally found a set of NOS ATE German wheel cylinders for the front brakes.
Installed and hooked up a Geek Shack bluetooth dash speaker with USB power ports. Really nice setup that bolts in, no drilling or modifications needed. Bonus is having USB charging ports for my phone. Plugs are positioned behind dash grill, hidden from view. Simple on and off switch and that's it, volume is on your phone. Sound quality & volume is good for what it is. A nice, no fuss setup that allows me to listen to some tunes while driving or parked. I bought it from Resto Bus Parts: https://resto-bus-parts.myshopify.com/products/spl...&_ss=r
New windshield wiper 2-speed motor from Butty's Bits tested and works great. Plug and play setup: https://www.buttysbits.com/product/bb-278-1955-1964-splitscreen-2-x-speed-12v-wiper-complete-kit/
Still waiting on transmission. There has been progress though, new gearing purchased, axle tubes sandblasted and cleaned, RGB's inspected.
That's it for now, more to come....

Looks great. That engine is gorgeous, good job!
Where does the name Hans come from? Any reason why you chose that? My friend has a 1959 single cab with logos from an old VW shop called “Hans”. |

Thank you! My Dad suggested it and it stuck. Perfect name for a German work truck. _________________ Erik

Latest Hans update....
I've gathered up some new parts for the front end, new German drums, bearings and misc brake parts. Rebuilt spindles by Greg Noble.
New front & existing rear drums have been turned and painted. Bearing races installed. Trans support was powder coated and new trans mounts (front & rear) ready. New link pin kit in hand as well. I received word yesterday that transmission is done. Axles and RGB's are next for rebuild.
Geek Shack Bluetooth dash speaker installed and hooked up. Tested and works great, easy to link with phone. Sound level & quality is just right for a vintage bus. Video Link: https://youtu.be/5nVOX0tm2LY
One step closer to wheels on the ground. _________________ Erik

Cool panel you have there. Engine really looks nice, well done for a period look.
I also like your lift, it seems more compact than some. |

Thanks! Yes, it's the tallest, but shortest overall length lift I could find. Perfect for VW's. Can't imagine not having it now, makes it a lot easier to work on the Bus & Beetle. Storage was main reason for purchase, but it's been awesome for wrenching. Stock VW Bus will fit underneath, no problem. My garage has a 14' ceiling, so it will allow a bus and beetle stacked, but not enough room for 2 buses stacked.
Bought June 2020, no issues at all, would buy another. Link: https://www.bestbuyautoequipment.com/atlas-pro-800...0ext-l.htm _________________ Erik

More progress....
Transmission & engine installed. Engine turns over and has oil pressure.
I also installed rebuilt front spindles by Greg Noble with new link pins. Hans is now sitting back on 4 wheels again!
An Empi Camber Compensator, that I rebuilt last year, was installed.
Complete brake system rebuilt & finished (front & rear). I still need to bleed & adjust brakes before the next step. Once completed, I need to connect fuel line and do an engine start-up.
I added an accessory brake light to rear bumper with custom mount. Nos Hella light with glass lens and shallow housing, fits nicely. I still need to finish wiring on this.
Getting closer to a test drive! Here's a few pictures of the progress.....

Do carry a torque wrench and socket for those RGB mounting bolts for the first 300 or so miles. Check for tightness about 20, 50, 100, 200, 300 miles. Hopefully by the time you check at 200 miles the bolts will no longer turn, and at 300 miles it will confirm they are staying tight.
Helped a friend install a transaxle at our place many years ago and told him the same before he headed home. About two months later he called to tell me about a clang he kept hearing when letting out the clutch when in gear. Asked him if he had been checking the tightness of the RGB mounting bolts, answer was "Ah, no.". We had to travel up to his place and install the 40% longer bolts and Time-Serts in all four holes, to fix the then beaten up original threads in the RGB. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Great write-up so far. I'll be following. Love them Dove Blue Double D's!

Yes! Good advise and something I had already planned to do. I have no excuse, it's so easy to do with the lift. I plan to check most of the nuts and bolts periodically, especially the ones I've touched and or replaced.
We only had to use 2 Time-serts, but after seeing how well they worked, wish I had done all of them. _________________ Erik

I'm totally digging the look of this bus. So far everything is looking very nice with exception of those fugly wheel balancing weights on the front of those freshly powder coated rims.
Not a good look. _________________ ----VW's in my garage----
