keep us posted! while it seems sketchy to be able to have stickers made, especially with alternate VINs, it makes sense they'd be available to repair vehicles with damage in the sticker area.
it'd so be worth the cost to put it right. _________________ -dan

Be curious to hear what they say. It’s not an easy sticker to remove. Someone went to a lot of trouble. _________________ ☮️ |

I’m interested too. The one on my red van is half burned. I saved what was left of it when I fixed the paint there. Luckily the part that is still there is the part with the VIN. |

Beginning in '88 or '89, VIN decals are 100% printed, not punched/stamped, and are also issued unique bar codes. Below is my '90's decal (altered to protect the van's privacy ).

On this topic, is there something I could coat or clear paint over this sticker to protect and preserve it?

Well, I finally had a chance to call VW here in North America.
Everyone was polite and helpful.
I spent a huge amount of time on the phone and here is the answer.
VW does NOT have production capabilities of making ID stickers for vehicles this old.
They suggest that I contact a collector enthusiast site and see about getting a reproduction sticker made.
(This surprised me and I expressed my surprise at being told to go get a boot leg ID sticker off the streets.)
But they were polite, they were helpful. I then asked what information they had on this Van, hoping for a production date, but they only had that the Warranty started on Dec 6, 1989.
Sadly no selling dealer name.
I pushed for other information but all they had was that a few recalls were performed during the 1990’s.
The serial number is very low so production was most likely production was about September of 1989 ........ as an educated guess.
I wonder if there is a way to get a production date?
Oh Well!
Off to find a counterfeit door jamb sticker with the blessings of Volkswagen themselves!

Does the van have its build sheet sticker near the fuse panel?
If you want to know, at the very least, the production month/year, PM me (or post) the serial number. _________________ ~Kamz

I'd give Meister Werks a jingle. They seem to have the capability to make any OEM style decal even if they don't show it. Had them custom make an identical California Registration RV decal that they didn't have advertised. All they needed was a pic and dimensions.
