Nothing. Go back and match the marks of crud up . You just need to know which axle (twoCVs plus shaft) went on which side of car, not their exact position

Opinions are all over the map on location marking.

Many feel, as I do, that knowing where the CV joint came from is important.

Many feel, again as I do, that knowing the original relationship of the cage and the star is important and what cage goes with what star.

Some feel that every ball location is important within the joint. I'm on the fence on this one but could easily slide into agreement.

Some feel that the order and placement of components doesn't matter, cleaning them and repacking is what truly matters most.

There is an "in" and an "out" on each joint.

It does matter also that keying both joints properly on one shaft is important to prevent possible binding on rotation.

Do some googling, read up on the opinions and decide for yourself what is important to you.

I’ve been doing a bunch of reading on the placement of the CV parts in orientation of the flange/shaft. That all makes sense, per square there.
The axle shaft is just an axle shaft right? There’s no in/out left right on it is there?

Automatic? Yes, two different lengths.

Stick shift? No, both are the same

since i didnt mark them, i noticed this here, which lines up with my having bearing balls of 2 different sizes.

I am assuming one of these cages is the loebro and one is the OEM, anyone identify?

Notice one of the bearing cages have these notches

VW OEM joints generally have VW part numbers stamped on them.

The cages certainly need to match the ball sizes. As far as the one ball that looks pitted, I don't think I would run it or any others that look that rough.

Groove ball groove tolerance is important , don’t mix these if you can avoid. Yes, I have mixed and no explosions occurred.

Cage tolerance is much looser as these more just hold ball position than take thrust forces. I’ve mixed many cages on CVS without I’ll effects, you can say that cage free joints are happier, just like hens.

for posterity, the older tightened cage (the ones with the pronounced cages) were the older style ones.

What’s this going to do to me?

A bit of thought (it's not 'intuitive'!) will let you position and use the CVs so the thrust is on the unworn sides - in this case it may not be so essential to keep all the bits in the same relative place as they were before.

But remember to keep track of them next time!

Id say buy new lobros and get on with life. When these dont ride well youll be back in the grease, Ive reloaded some real shitty parts in the past but I was en route and just needed to get someplace. If your home and can float them. Buy new ones and do the job once. Measure the shafts and see if new joints will fit 1st. Its one of those jobs that sucks to do twice or on the side of the road. Too much damn grease to contend with.
